I’ve been reading a lot of mentions on the boards about a new musical theater studio or program at NYU, but have not seen anything on NYU’s website that suggests that CAP21 and Steinhardt are still the only two programs. Does anyone have hard info. if in fact a third or replacement program is in the works? Thanks!

Students who are currently enrolled (including incoming freshman) have been informed that Tisch is phasing out their collaboration with CAP21, as they are rolling out their own MT Studio.

A lot of the details are still being worked out, and NYU is notoriously slow about updating Tisch’s information (even about simple stuff like audition dates when my D auditioned). Best thing to do is to contact Chair Liz Bradley at Tisch and she can answer your questions.

There is nothing yet up on their website. First of all, Steinhardt is totally separate from Tisch and offers a BM, not a BFA and is NOT affected by ANY changes.

At Tisch, CAP21 has been the only MT studio. However, for all those who apply to Tisch starting in this next cycle, CAP21 will no longer be affiliated with Tisch and won’t be their MT studio. CAP21 will continue to train current CAP21 students and so I am ONLY talking about those who have yet to apply to Tisch, not those who are currently attending or those who are entering this fall.

For new applicants, Tisch is creating the New Studio on Broadway: Musical Theater and Acting. This will be the MT studio that replaces the CAP21 studio for MT training at Tisch (but it also offers acting and also replaces Strasberg studio for new applicants). The specifics of the new studio have not yet been released but rest assured, Tisch will have a BFA program with MT for new applicants. It won’t be through CAP21 which was an external studio not run by Tisch, but will rather be an internal studio administered by Tisch and headed by Kent Gash. There is no THIRD program. If you are interested in MT at NYU, the two options continue to be either Steinhardt for a BM or Tisch for a BFA (you can ONLY apply to one school at Tisch). The only change is that instead of CAP21 studio for MT at Tisch, there is a new studio for MT at Tisch…NOT an additional one. I suppose there will temporarily be more than two (Steinhardt plus Tisch’s CAP21 and Tisch New Studio on Broadway), as CAP21 is being phased out with current students but for those about to apply, the New Studio on Broadway (MT) will be the only Tisch studio specifically for MT training (not counting the fact that some other studios offer some MT training such as at Playwrights Horizons). I hope that helps.

EDIT…I cross posted with MTgrlsmom.

Does the CAP21 program use its own facilities, e.g., dance studios, etc. for the Tisch program or does Tisch have all its own facilities for MT already? Clearly, they are talking about hiring all new faculty for the internal MT program, but will there also be new facility needs as well? If they are actually combining the MT program with the former Strasburg studio, won’t it be huge compared with other programs?

Anne,

CAP21, along with all external studios at Tisch, have their OWN FACILITIES which are not owned by NYU or on NYU’s campus. Tisch has some internal studios such as Experimental Theater Wing which are owned by NYU and use NYU facilities (my D just finished at ETW and her studio was right inside the Tisch building!).

From the very little information that has been released to current students, NYU/Tisch has located new building space and is in the midst of creating the New Studio on Broadway at this new facility. It will be owned by NYU/Tisch and not be an external studio off campus as are most of the Tisch studios. So, yes, it will be a brand new facility. As far as the size, I have no information. I don’t think we can say it is equivalent in size to CAP and Strasberg combined. Simply, those two studios are being phased out and a new studio is being created. How the numbers play out, I can’t say. But one thing I CAN say is that in Tisch studios, class size is small…not over 15. The size of the program doesn’t affect class size. I am sure the new studio will be in keeping with the same standard in place now for all of Tisch’s studios. Tisch is a big school but I can tell you that my kid had a lot of individual attention and the faculty in her studios knew her very well. One neat thing is that she got to learn and train with a variety of people over her four years and not just a handful as is the case in a small BFA program. One can examine the size of a BFA program but it is important to look at class size and in that respect, the class size at Tisch in all of their studios is like at most BFA programs. They simply have more classes.

One more thing when it comes to facilities…I have heard that they will be improving performance spaces for MT and other Tisch productions and in that regard, this is an improvement over the production space at CAP21.

anne1244 - CAP21 does indeed use its own facilities, but Tisch has their own classrooms and dance studios as well. They plan on adding and remodeling additional facilities. Also, there is faculty currently on staff (for the existing dance, drama and voice programs), that I imagine may get involved with the new MT Studio as well as new faculty that will be brought on board (there have been some exciting new hires as posted on a different thread).

I understand that the new program will only be slightly larger than the current CAP program. In reality, this will mean that the program overall will be more competitive to get into as there is one less Studio at Tisch that students will be able to get placed in.

Thanks for the info, Soozievt and MTgrlsmom. Of course, there are lots of unknowns for any new applicants and there is absolutely ZERO info on their website at this point. It sounds like current Tisch students are receiving what little accurate information there is about the prospective program. Please continue to share as more info becomes available, and thanks again.
