Whats the social/party scene like

stuckinnj congrats on those excellent SAT scores!

Have you had the opportunity to visit the schools during session while the students are on campus?

With those excellent SAT scores you will certainly have choices to make!
Congrats, again.

And, just wanted to clear up something about Texastaximom's son. She was pointing out there is a stereotypical Bucknellian, but her son does NOT fit that profile. He is on the debate team, involved with the Democratic club and the music scene. So she was saying that her son finds plenty to do and is enjoying Bucknell immensely, and IS NOT THAT PARTYING FRAT BOY.....
Just wanted to clarify that on Texastaximom's behalf :)

EEEP! Yes, stuck...please re-read. My son is not "stereotpyical" and has done quite well in the Bucknell atmosphere where there is plenty of room for all types of students.

I can guarantee you that you will encounter all types of kids at every university. It is up to you to decide how you fit in (or want to).

sorry texastaximom. didn't mean to offend you :(

sorry i'm really busy and i just got time to scan through your posts.

btw, my friend and university of maryland told me that he can barely study with the amount of noise there is at his dorm... and he had to get a white noise machine...

is it like that at bucknell? or do you happen to know about university of wisconsin-madison?

I'm a freshman girl, and I can tell you Buknell is exactly what you make of it. Depending on where you live you aren't surrounded by parties. I can go into my room on a saturday night and do whatever I want without worrying about some drunk person barging in, but then I also have the choice to go over to a frat party and have some fun (again its entirley a choice). I've only been to three frat parties so far (mostly because I ride on saturday mornings so friday nights are off, and am too tired from riding that I don't go out on saturday nights). I know many people in choice who have a wonderful time and don't drink or do anything nonkosher. Parties are there if your looking for them but by no means forced in-your-face. It helps to have a great roommate, like I do. She's a major partier, but insanely nice about it i.e. she doesn't turn on lights when she comes back, VERY friendly and considerate drunk/high (just pot and sometimes shrooms) person, never messes up our room or drinks in it (something we talked about in the beginning).

Noise depends on where you live. I believe there is a quiet hall, and some dorms are naturally quieter than others. I live in Mcdonnell, and it's relativley quiet.

Hehe as to the original question, while I myself do not smoke, I have heard from my roommate, who does, that there is pot, but it varies in availability and diversity. When a person hasn't been through in some time it gets expensive (laws of supply and demand!), but if you get some when it's just gotten in, and simply save it, it's not too pricey.

I think we've beaten this topic into the ground. My parting thoughts--(serious inquiries can pm me.)

I will say for the last time--college (this applies to all of them) is not a babysitter. It is up to the student to decide what he wants to do--work/study/play/party-- and how he wants to fit in. Likewise for potential roommates, hallmates, and classmates.

A vibrant school will have ALL kinds of people...not just quiet study buddies that need to hear a pin drop in order to sleep and study, and not just rowdy-rowdys that stay up all night dancing the night away. Most kids don't fit either extreme, both extremes are obnoxious. Most kids find a way to adjust--like Equine and her roommate. It's called becoming an adult. Good luck finding a workplace or an apartment where everyone is just the same, and like the same working conditions/living conditions.

The real world is not just full of people we like and are like us. I am apalled at some of the superior and judgemental behavior I read on various threads on these boards. Going into the college selection process with fixed stereotypes can actually hurt the chances of finding a really wonderful school. If students want to insist, without attending, that a certain school is a certain way, then for heaven sakes cross it off the list and move on.

Personally, I think you grow more if you attend a school where the students aren't exactly like you. Why pay money and not be exposed to anything different religiously, culturally or socio-economically? It is only through our differences that we can become more sure of who we are, or perhaps even change who we are.

ok thank you both. we definitely have beaten the topic to the ground...

i guess i get too paranoid sometimes. i tend to be afraid that i will end up just like my friend at university of maryland.

texastaximom, i was reading different boards and things, and it got me rather scared. i guess i had a pre-concieved idea that it would be a heavy party school. the thing is, i still want to apply to bucknell for its education despite what i heard. i just wanted to see what degree it would be just in case i did get accepted there.

i handed in my portfolio for my volunteer music group yesterday through the mail. :) i'm so relieved now. sent in my bucknell app!!

yaay. :)

texastaximom, would it be too much if i PMed you my essay? can you tell me if it's interesting? or too bland.

anyways, off the topic of this,

is there a lot of school spirit equine? do people attend the football games?

nj- the shool spirit varies by sport : - ) Basketball is INSANE. We just recently sold out the Sojka pavillion for a basketball game (it's huge). I'm in CA and we just had a few games at Santa Clara university, and I went to the first one and there were more bucknell people there than any other school including santa clara. Our football team isn't particularly amazing (thats what you get whan brains still matter) so we're not as ferociously spirited about them, but people do still go to the games.

I know you didn't ask this, but since you said you were initially attracted because of the educational side, I just want to reassure you that that aspect is amazing. I have had wonderful teachers (all 4 of them so far but still) and everyone really cares. The facilities are great--the library has beanbags and study rooms you can go into. My biggest class had 34 people in it (25, 17, 12 were the other class sizes). Academically I love it here.

that's awesome! thank you for telling me equine!

i love schools that have huge school spirit and pride in their sports!

my first choice school is actually uc irvine/any of the other ucs (except merced or riverside). can you tell me about them? which one do you think is best overall. i don't think i have a chance at all at berkley or LA so do you know about the other ones?

My son's band will be playing at the Uptown this weekend. :)
