Hey all,
I am probably applying for transfer admission to Brown (among other schools). I feel I have a pretty good shot at getting into Brown (3.88 college gpa, 1500 SAT) and added the school to my list because I think the school has a very intellectual-friendly campus and has a great program in history. Now I would like to know about the student body. A few questions for Brown students/grads:
How nice (not just polite), in general, are the students?
How much, in general, do the students really care to participate and contribute in class?
What is school spirit like?
What is the student style like? Preppy, too diverse to characterize, maybe california casual (hah)?

Thanks!

Brown kids are the nicest people you will ever meet. I'm from a university town in the midwest, and I'm used to people being pretty friendly, but I've been blown away with how kind and outgoing Brown students are. Obviously, I haven't liked every single person I've met, but I feel like on average, people here are a lot more caring and friendly than the kids I went to high school with (independent prep school).

Another cool thing about Brown is that every single person in every single one of your classes is taking that class either because they want to, or because they have to take it for a major that they want (so it generally fits into their area of interest). That doesn't mean that everybody loves every class, or that everybody participates in every class, but I imagine that you'd get a higher rate of interest and participation than at a school with stricter requirements.

At the school in my home town, school spirit was strong, but it was focused mainly around the football team. Here, school spirit doesn't seem to have much to do with athletics (although we do support our sports teams!). I think a lot of people just generally love the school and are proud of it. If you come visit campus, you will see Brown sweatshirts all over the place.

Clothes-wise, a lot of people dress on the continuum from casual to preppy, jeans/t-shirt, skirt/tank-top kinds of outfits. But there are plenty of people who dye their hair cool colors, wear crazy tights, dress in ethnic clothing, etc. In general, the student body dresses pretty similarly to other prestigious universities, maybe a little funkier on average.

That all sounds excellent, I am totally applying!
