In a few weeks I’m going to head up to Gainesville to check out UF and give it a fair shot as a possiblity for where I’m going to transfer after I get my AA.

I know there’s probably going to be a fair amount of bias, but I have a few questions.

Why University of Florida? What makes it so special and so different from any other university in Florida?

If you didn’t end up at UF, where would you have gone?

How are the people, honestly? Are they nice? Snobby?

How are transfer students treated? I’ve read that the university does not necessarily like taking in transfers but because of the Florida AA rule it has to.

How is Gainesville? Big party town? Boring?

Anything else that you think I should know that would be helpful to me.

I really appreciate any answers you guys can give me. It’ll help me a ton. Again, thank you!

Anybody got anything to say about it?? :(

The difference between UF and the second best university in Florida (FSU) is substantial in my opinion. So much so that I grew up a Seminole fan in a Seminole dominant household and I chose UF without even applying to FSU.

I turned down admissions offers from Emory, Rice, Tulane, Washington University in St. Louis, William and Mary, UVA, and UNC Chapel Hill to attend UF.

The people at UF are great. Southern charm without the redneck element.

Not sure about that one since I'm not a transfer.

Gainesville is a college town through and through. Take that as you may but I personally like it because for the most part, the town is there to cater to the student.

If you're earning your AA in Florida and UF accepts you as a transfer, you would be crazy not to go. You won't have to worry about UF not having a program or degree you're interested in as there are over 200 majors at UF.

Good luck!

Thank you for replying :)!

I think it depends on the area you want to study. UF has some programs that are tops others that are average. Same for FSU.

While Gainesville is a small town, it's mostly all about UF. Take UF out of Gainesville and you get Williston or Lawtey.

Tallahassee is substantially more than just a college town.

I am a transfer student to UF from a Florida CC - although I am yet to start (Fall 06). My brother is doing his Endo Residency for Dental there, and has lived there for 7 + years. I have visited him for a good amount of that time, and so far I love the city. As far as not liking florida CC students - that is a misconception. It is a whole lot more difficult to transfer to UF w/ an AA than it is to UCF or FSU or USF w/ an AA. This is due to limited seating and increased competition.

This year and perhaps the next (I cant remember when off the top of my head) will be the last time that any Florida CC student has a guaranteed spot at UF - right now about 40% of the transfer applicants are accepted - and this is expected to drop in the next year. UCF still has decision days at my school where if you have a good enough GPA - 3.4 and above - your in. I know students with 3.7's that got turned away from UF this Fall. So take it for what its worth.

The only big difference I saw in the towns between FSU and UF was the population. Most of UF's demographic appears to be white. Im not saying minorities are not there - I just didnt notice nearly as much as Tallahassee. This may be due to the presence of FAMU in Tallahassee. Gainesville is also way smaller - 5 miles in any direction puts you in the sticks, no joke. If that doesn't bother you, I say go to UF. Pay the same, get a more impressive degree.
