I've never been to Chicago or anywhere in the midwest. This week I'm visiting a school in Chicago, can anyone who lives there/has been there tell me what the weather is like? Does it really snow in every season other than summer? Should I bring a snow jacket and warm mittens and the like to prepare?

A snow jacket is entirely unnecessary in my opinion; a spring jacket should be fine. The weather is unpredictable though: snowing during Easter yet in the fifties the past couple days.

I live somewhat close to Chicago (4 hours; it's close enough). The weather in Chicago can change drastically overnight. This weekend's forecast (probably not too accurate, but it's good enough for this) says that it will be rainy on Friday/Sunday, with temps in the upper 30s to low 40s. The forecast for the time you'll be there is really all that matters. There's no sense in bringing arctic gear when you won't need it. Probably a warm coat will be fine, unless you're really not used to the cold, in which case you'd want more layers. Everybody has their own policies on what to do about rain. Some people carry umbrellas, while others see umbrellas as prissy. Use your own judgment there.

If the forecast doesn't say it will snow, then it probably won't. If you want a long term forecast for college, I'll say this: Chicago is hot in the summer, cold in the winter, and anywhere between those in fall and spring. It's common to have snow in April, but the snow can come after 3 days of 75-degree sunny days. Yes, I suppose technically it does snow in Chicago every season except summer, but it only really snows from November-early April. Winters are usually brutal, with multitudes of days with subzero windchill and even subzero temperatures for lows. If you're from the coastal region of the Northeast, you probably have no experience with Chicago-type winters. The Northeast is much warmer during the winter than the Midwest.

If you're coming to Chicago for college, you'll definitely want plenty of warm clothes. But if you're coming for the weekend, you'll be fine without a parka and four sweaters. Just please don't wear mittens; try gloves instead. I don't know anyone that wears mittens.

Good luck on your visit!

Spring has been late getting here this year but today was OK with sun and temps around 50. We had 6 ins. of snow on Friday but most of it's gone, however you'll see ugly grey piles of plowed stuff in parking lots. Current weekend forecast is for highs in the 40s, lows in the 30s with sun on Saturday. You didn't say what college you are visiting, but I hope you get the chance to check out some of the great cultural institutions in this town.

I live in Chicagoland. This weekend i believe its going to be in the 30s and 40s according to the weather people. Have fun on your school visit.

At the moment it is thundering and snowing at the same time. Go figure.

It's pretty cold. My bro is in Northwestern and I'm actually going to visit him next weekend, and being from Florida, the 30 degrees in Chicago is going to kill me. haha.
