Whats the work day like for a mech/aero engineer?

Im trying to decide between mech, aero, or petro and I just wanted some insight on how working as a mech or aero would be like. How much time is spent in the office? Is it team oriented or is everyone working in cubicles? How much time is spent working in the field?

The thing that draws me to petro is that most of the engineers work on site, and I really like the idea of the on-off schedule. The normal 9-5 in the office seems very dull to me, and I cant imagine myself doing that 20-30 years. So how does the mech or aero work day compare to the average 9-5 job?

That depends highly on the job you get, not the field you study. There are mechanical engineers that works solely in an office at a desk and some that work plenty out in the field. Same with petroleum. The real question is what do you want to do? You can certainly get a job as a plant engineer where you work as a mechanical engineer on site getting your hands dirty and carrying hours that aren’t necessarily 9 to 5 every day. I know plenty of people who have done that (as well as the ones who work in an office all day). You just have to apply to the right jobs.
