What's there to do at Dartmouth?

Jeez Louise!

Get a freakn' grip.

"I did not mean to give offense"

Sure you did.

"The article is fairly representative of Dartmouth."

Oh really. Dartmouth as diferentiated from what other college (or if one believes what one reads in the papers pretty much any Westchester County high school) exactly?

A group of Darmouth coeds had too much to drink in an off campus celebration. Yep, that says "Animal House" to me.

"The blame for this, I believe, can be laid rather squarely at the feet of past administrations. For years the college did very, very little to grow viable alternatives to the fraternity scene, and did almost nothing until quite recently to physically structure dormitories to encourage residential social interaction."

Which administrations would that be? The faculty and administration tried to eliminate the fraternity system right after coeducation back in the late 70's and Collis was built in the same time frame. That takes you back to Kemeny. Before him, it was not exactly possible for female Dartmouth students to misbehave, was it?

I spent 4 years at Dartmouth way back then, set foot in a frat all of one time, and never felt that the administration needed "to grow viable alternatives to the fraternity scene".

"The class was scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday mornings. I noted a pattern; the students were bright and lively on Tuesdays but many appeared lethargic with eyes glazed over on Thursdays. ...this is a common probllem, you see the Greek houses have their house meetings on Wednesday nights so the students are often hung over on Thursdays! ...anyone who refuses to see just how deeply rooted the drinking culture is at Dartmouth is at best delusional and at worst dishonest."

Geez, one would think that the "brightest and most engaged students you have ever taught" would be able to schedule their courses on MWF or on TTH afternoons if they planned on getting drunk every Wednesday night. One might also think it remarkable that such a "deeply rooted" drinking culture as you refer to is able to maintain such discipline - only drinking on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays apparently. :)

...as for who's the one being delusional and dishonest ...

I was visiting Dartmouth one time and there was a parade going on with about 200 people watching in the streets on campus. I think half the town came out that day. :)
