All my friends tell me there's nothing to do there and that its alot like Chicago U. So, any info on the CMU area would be nice. Thank You.

From Greek Life, to sports, to independent clubs to off-campus parties - CMU has it all. It's for both the introvert and the extrovert. What are you specifically looking to do?

There's nothing to do here but take Prozac.

are there any ethnic areas? like chinatown or koreatown...etc.

"All my friends tell me there's nothing to do there and that its alot like Chicago U"

haha that makes it seem much more appealin to me. Chicago was my first choice

theres sq hill....which is kinda like jewish-town.

polish hill, bloomfield (italian)

"jewish-town" rofl! that's fantastic, does that mean I can get good jew-food there when I get home-sick? What restaurants are there that I should check out?

I think that Kazansky's has pretty good maztoh ball soup, and everything there is really cheap. There's a couple of kosher food stores/delis, and a few kosher restaurants, including a mediterranean place I've never been too.

idamayer: YES. VERY MUCH SO. hahaha. umm my fav is smithfield st deli (which is actually as good or better IMO than the real smithfield st deli [that's on smithfield st, not murray ave])

there's also a new french place (bahh i forget the name, its right on the tip of my tongue) that's supposedly good.

chesapeake bagels is good too--great lox and chopped liver stuff. actually they had this choc. covered maztoh the other day--aweeeesssommmeeee. :)

I don't attend CMU but I have lived right on the outskirts of pittsburgh my whole life...as a matter of fact I was on the campus today playing soccer (sorry lacrosse team) and people seem very active outdoors...until around 9 o'clock. the campus is DEAD at dark, at least from the few times I have been there. Pittsburgh on the other hand has food, kennywood, shopping districts which are actually starting to build up nicely, and a little bit more. Sq. hill is pretty much where the jewish people are too. the truth is, you are so close to the university of pittsburgh and the city, including smaller parts like Oakland, Shadyside, and a few other areas that it would be hard not to find something to do OFF campus. you can get on campus info from an actual student.

greek life is definitely amazing! even if you don't think you'd be interested, you should at least check it out.

other than that, there is a LOT to do, for everyone. there are parties, and a lot of campus events, a lot of organization-sponsored events, and since you have a free pass to the bus system, you can go to places off campus. waterfront, shadyside, southside, squirrel hill. there are malls that are a bit of a trip, but i LOVED the century III mall

depending on your courseload though, you might find that getting sleep on the weekends and playing video games with your friends is enough =).

there is stuff to do sometimes, but yeah it's not super exciting so definately explore on and off campus if you come here (I'm not going to pretend it is super super fun - it can be fun but academics are a focus) you can of course have fun off campus if you somehow get to know students from other colleges in town where they might have better parties

greek orgs are active (especially during orientation) and have lots of CS kids as members (some cooler then others from what I hear) along with obviously other majors....if you come here at the least check some out during orientation week

century III which was mentioned in the above post is about an hour bus ride (not fun with the constant stopping, but tolerable especially with an mp3 player)...there are closer places like south side works and the waterfront as mentioned....etc..if you find a group of friends that you fit in with (or if you are female!) and are more focused on academics you'll be fine! It's not a social haven though!
