What's there to do with a pHd in the humanities fields?

Paraticularly English and History...besides teach. Or is there nothing to do besides teach? Because I want to make a lot of money and I know teaching won't do that for me.

Do you really want to teach and do original research? If not, there are plenty of professional master's programs (MBA, MPP, MSW, etc..) that can help you make more money. Keep in mind that a master's degree in the humanities is worthless.

Original research sounds cool because I can accomplish a lot. In further thought, so does making textbooks. because I like to write. But teaching students does not sound self-fulfilling at all in the sense that I wouldn't really be achieving anything for myself.

Subjects like anthropology, English, history, and psychology interest me strongly. It's just that making money, being competetive (i don't want total job security), and succeeding is very important to me.

Are you interested in management? Plenty of liberal arts majors get MBA or related degrees for better job security and higher pay.

Just research and writing mainly.

It's starting to sound like i'm going to have to win the Nobel Prize to make any decent money...

You could also start your own company or pursue a publishing/journalism career if academia is not a right fit for you.

People don't get PhD to make money. Most get them because they need it to do something they want to do, which is usually teaching at a university and/or research. I think about 1 in 5 humanities PhD find jobs as faculty, and few other jobs require a PhD. The degree takes too much time and the monetary payoff is not that great (part of the reason most PhD grad students have free tuition + living stipend).

If you want money and enjoy the humanities, consider getting a JD or MBA instead. Also, if you go to a target school like Harvard, you can get into Ibanking as a humanities major especially if you start networking early.

Faculty I know- with PhDs teaching in business schools- start around $125k, and mid career earn around $200-250k. Plenty started in the humanities, and parlayed into a PhD in econ, marketing, information systems, organizational behavior.
