I hear there is 1800 dollar Hope Credits that Obama said last night will be increased to 2500...how do I get this? Can I get this if I received Financial Aid (just grants) which has so far payed for all of my county college tuition? Combines my mother and father make 40k, I made like 13k, we all paid taxes throughout the year...I am a full time student as well. Even though we didnt pay for school, can we still apply for this hope credit thing? I'm going to start University come this fall, and I expect to need money and that FAFSA wont cover me as much this time.

It’s complicated.

But if your grants were specifically to be applied to the tuition and fees (qualified expenses), you won’t be eligible for the Hope credit (or the Lifetime credit). If your grants allowed that they could be applied to ANY college expenses, and they weren’t applied to tuition and fees (in other words, you paid tuition and fees out of pocket or through loans), then you might be eligible for the Hope.

You can’t get the Hope credit if you didn’t pay the tuition and fees.

But like I say, it’s very complicated.

Damn so your saying this whole thing about Obama helping students go to college…only works if they have to pay for it and arent eligible for financial aid?

It’s to help people with college costs. If you’re not paying the costs then you don’t need help paying them… right? Next year, assuming your tuition and fee costs increase and are not covered, so that you’ll be paying them yourself to some degree, then you might be eligible for the tax credit the following year.
