What's to do on campus?

This is my first week on campus and there doesn't seem to be much to do but drink. I come from a larger city where there is a lot to do so campus is a disappointment. Does anyone have any suggestions for a nondrinker? Does it get better? All of the guys in my dorm jsut seem to want to party which is OK, but not all of the time. Any groups that have stuff to do that's more interesting?? This is really going to be bad when the snow starts.

study, exercise, deepen your faith, work…look on inside.nd.edu under the student life tab to see what is happening each day.

What kind of activities are you looking for? The info. expo for the clubs on campus is coming up soon.

There use to be a formal group on campus of non drinking students. Check around and see if it is still going. It is early in the game don’t be discouraged. Our daughter is a Sophmore there and is not a partier and she has great weekends!

I agree with newdomer. I hope it will be better when more groups start doing things. I’m from a big city and I hope more real things start happening soon!! Walking around campus drunk seems to be the favorite past time right now ;-(

I know how you guys feel :frowning: This weekend all the freshman girls on my floor went out and partied. I totally felt like a loser being the only one who didn’t go.

I hope all of you have a different report next week (football game weekend!). I am happy to report that my daughter, a freshman, has already been to 2 soccer games, applied for an on-campus job and worked her first shift, and attended 2 dorm parties where she advised it is OK to not drink. She is making a lot of friends, but I also know she is making a big effort to introduce herself to others. Good luck to all of you.

I know what you mean about the drunken dorms! This was a disappointment to my freshman son 2 years ago. My advice to him was to get out of the dorm and find something to do.
Tuesday evening is Activities Night. Please go and find out about all the different clubs at Notre Dame. My son felt out of his element until he found like minded people in a recreational club. He is now a junior and is totally integrated into his ND experience, and an officer of one of his clubs.
Your head may spin when you learn of all the ways you can broaden your own ND experience.

Good luck!

I know exactly how you feel, princetongirl93! I’m a freshman and the exact same thing happened to me. This weekend it was a little better because I went to the comedy show, but last weekend and this saturday night it was just awkward when my whole floor left to go party and I had nothing to do because none of them wanted to do anything a little more chill! so frustrating.

Why don’t the four of you freshmen PM each other and meet up next weekend for something fun that doesn’t involve drinking? It beats feeling that you are alone and other likeminded freshmen might be interested too! You just found each other here!

Hopefully, FlipSide is up and running. Their mission is to provide fun activities that don’t involve alcohol so look for them among the SAO groups.

So this post was about Friday the 26th, right?

It was Irishenanigans, so there was a lot to do besides go to parties (ie, free food, shows, laser tag in LaFortune from 10-2). Still, most people were at parties, but not all were drinking parties. I was at a chill drinking party, and it was still fun. Went to a really bad dance party, which I promptly left, then went to a non-drinking party.

There’s a lot to do, but if you just stay in your dorm, then your weekends will be boring. You don’t have to drink to have fun (I don’t), but you probably have to be outgoing, and okay with other people drinking (they usually appreciate having a couple sober people around in case something goes wrong anyway).

Anyway, this weekend had stuff too, like Gabriel Iglesias, and the game (I know…) took up like 16 hours of Saturday.

Just ask your RA what kind of campus events are coming up, make some friends in your classes, get people’s phone numbers, and find stuff to do outside your dorm (or inside, if you get together some friends) this weekend.

If you try, you’ll have plenty of fun!

(Also, there are like four of you saying exactly the same thing. Just message each other and meet up on campus for something more to your interests.)

I’d be up for that if you guys are. Maybe we could just meet for lunch or at Lafun for a few minutes or something? If you guys want to just let me know. This weekend we’re having a game watch in my dorm on saturday night and I’m going to bridesmaids tomorrow, so hopefully it will be a better weekend for me and for all of you too!

Maybe next weekend? I’m going to a concert this weekend off campus

Which dorm is having a game watch? Isn’t there a big watch party somewhere on campus?
I signed up for Flipside so maybe there will be a few good events soon.

Next weekend sounds good. I’m not sure if all dorms are having game watches- mine is having one though- but I think that there probably is a big watch party somewhere, not sure where. I signed up for Flipside too, I think they had Rudy showing somewhere tonight. I think their next activity is like a big scavenger hunt or something.

If you didn’t drink prior to that football game you may start!!

The last play stunned the whole campus. SOOOOOOO close! Most exciting game ever, just ended up on wrong side of the score. Go Irish, anyway!!!

I am a parent, but don’t freak out. My freshman daughter has the same complaints that I am reading here. I read CC, but have never posted before. One group that I have heard about is Flipside which organizes events that don’t include alcohol. Not sure how that is controlled, but at least it is an effort to support the students that don’t want to drink or at least don’t want to drink all of the time.
If any of you want to PM me, I will pass the contact on to her. She grew up in a metropolitan area with a lot of things to do, so South Bend has taken some adjustment, especially since freshman can’t have cars.
Good luck to all of you who are looking for alternatives. There seem to be more people than you think in the same situation, so I hope you find each other.

Parent of recent graduate here. He would echo the comments of the above posters, although he was probably one of the fall freshman partiers. I think it will let up somewhat as the semester moves along, a) the workload will deepen for classes and b) all those freshman enjoying the newfound freedom will decide maybe it’s not so great to party and puke for 3 days straight every weekend. By his sophomore year, he drank a little socially when at parties, but not much more.

I am curious. Two posters (at least) were from large cities and saying they were used to doing so much more, SB was a bore, etc. What type of things did you typically do in your home-towns? Please, parents, students, anyone can respond-in the last 5 years I’ve heard this comment on cc several times and I always wondered what the other things were. We are from rural midwestern area, so S never had this complaint.
