I added it on my list because I'd get good financial aid, but I've getting a bad vibe from the school. What's it really like down there?

Obviously that is far too broad a question to answer. What kind of “vibe” are you getting that you think is bad? I will say that several surveys show Tulane to be among the schools with the happiest students, and New Orleans to be one of the great college “towns”. Here on CC, one of the things that people report back from their visits almost without fail is how great all the students seem and that they are extremely enthusiastic about Tulane.

The Academics are very good as well. S2 is loving his philosophy major. He works his butt off, but has a great time in NOLA as well, including playing in a band.

According to your post here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/15534811-post1.html you are looking for a small (<2000 UG) school. Tulane’s UG population is small (around 8K UG), but not the size of a LAC. What are you looking for in a school, and what do you mean by “getting a bad vibe?”

NO oops sorry, i meant to put MORE THAN 2000.
And I don’t even know…maybe because I don’t know much about the school I have a bad feeling about it.

If you have a specific question that posters can address, that might be helpful. YOur stats suggest that Tulane would probably be a reach for you, and its not likely that you’d be considered for merit aid, but they are generous with need based aid with your reported low family income.

You might want to read this tread and ask the current student your questions http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1431541-student-answering-questions.html

I don’t even know what to say to a statement like that, except that you should look into it and any other school with which you might not be so familiar with an open mind. There are a lot of really excellent schools in this country (and elsewhere) that are not nationally famous.

I think that a great way to get a feel for a school (if you can not visit) is to watch videos. There are many you tube videos out there, but I have found that the best website is youniversity. com. The Tulane video is: [Welcome to YOUniversityTV, the College and Careers Portal](http://www.youniversitytv.com/) video/ viewvideo/ 3341 (no spaces). Also, the virtual tour on the Tulane web site is very good: http:// admission. tulane. edu/ tour (no spaces).
It’s funny, because all along the application and admissions process, the one thing that I have been saying about Tulane is that I just love the “vibe” of the school (we visited last April). And, now, DS has decided that it is official; he will be attending Tulane in the Fall. I could not be happier!

Alright guys, sorry, I’ll be more specific- what’s the campus environment like?

As in… what, exactly??

:p I mean, what are the students like (geographical origin, preppiness, political views, interest in sports, etc.)- or are they diverse to generalize? What kind of architecture is used? Greek life? Night life? Dorms?

There are 6,000 undergrads at Tulane. As you might imagine, there are all kinds of people. Tulane is considered one of the most geographically diverse schools in the country. Tulane is obviously not competitive on the level of an Alabama or Notre Dame in sports, but they are building a new football stadium on campus so that will be a big improvement over having to go to the Superdome, about 4 miles away. The quality of the teams is also looking much brighter.

Greek life is active but not dominant, and as for night life…it’s New Orleans. Spend a little time on the web site. There are video tours of the campus [Tulane University - Campus Tour](http://admission.tulane.edu/tour/) and the dorms [Tulane Admission: About Tulane](http://admission.tulane.edu/about/dormtours.php). The freshman dorms are on the older side, but many of the residence halls for sophomores and up are fairly new to really new, with another new dorm for sophomores being constructed as we speak. They are also going to build a new dining hall that will have dorm rooms attached, or at least that’s the plan.

But your questions are really very general and don’t have very meaningful answers. Students tend to find friends that share their interests or that they get along with well enough to explore new interests, no matter what they are looking for. What are your interests? What do you think you are looking for in a school? From the little you said in your post that jym linked, Tulane meets the criteria. I assume you are a junior right now? It is unclear if you are saying you already applied or not. If you are a senior and applied already, have you heard back from admissions?

@fallenchemist- I’m a junior right now, applying next year (and you know, probably not getting in but it’s doesn’t hurt). I just saw a couple of the videos- ti seems pretty wonderful. I’ll definitely do some more research.

It is a beautiful campus. Has been used in a variety of Hollywood movies.

Good luck with your search!

op, i highly recommend you participate in their “ask the admissions” chat session. the transcript from Monday’s session is available on Tulane’s website.
