Whats W&L comparable to...?

I really like w&l but i am looking for a safety college. I was wondering if there are any colleges out there that are very similiar to w&l but not as selective? Also what are other colleges of about the same selectivity as w&l, just so I can get a better gage on how difficult it will be for me to get into w&l? thanks so much!

im applying rd... could acceptees post [basic] stats (gpa, sat, ecs, etc.)

Similar is tough with liberal arts schools in selectivity terms - look for schools with similar US News Rankings - Colgate, Vassar, Wesleyan and Davidson.

In terms of safeties - Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania is very similar to W&L but easier to get into, you could also look at Mary Washington (in Richmond I believe) which is public making it both an academic and a financial safety.

Sewanee, Gettysburg, Rhodes, Hampden-Sydney are safeties to consider.

Any school in the top 30 is pretty comparable to W&L in terms of selectivity. W&L is actually more selective than some schools ranked ahead of it.

Hampden Sydney doesnt exactly work for girls though

thanks yall! this has helped so much, i am actually going to look at sewannee over my spring intercession, but i was talking to my boyfriend and he says that sewannee isnt exactly known for having extremely bright people. Is that true?

Well, if you're looking at a SAFETY school, you shouldn't expect extremely bright people throughout. There are some people who come off as complete dumbasses here; you'll get a smattering anywhere you go.

that's true but there are some safetys that are better than others, i didnt mean to come off wrong i was just wondering what its rep was, but i guess it is true that no matter where you go there'll be a mix

Sewanee from what I've heard is a lot like W&L in that it's a pretty big party school, and it's even more rural. There are some pretty famous people who came from Sewanee, and it's ranked pretty well, so definitely check it out. I decided to apply to Rhodes instead for my safety.

i know a few people who go to sewanee and many applying there. i believe to be a more solid backup than rhodes; however, as morgan mentioned, its location is EXTREMELY rural. when i visited, i felt like it was miles and miles from even a gas station.

well i am used to rural, my town has all of 250 people in it lol but i am planning to go up and visit sewanee this spring so i am excited to see how it is!

That's the best way to find out about any school - I always recommend a campus visit if at all possible (so many people who aren't too interested in W&L fall lin love after visiting).

Oh and Morgan - did you manage to get home alright? I know there are people stuck in Lex or Roanoke cause of the storm.

HAHA yeah Diima funny story-- I had a 2:23PM flight, got to the airport JUST IN TIME to switch (for free) to a 10:10 flight to Boston, and took a bus home. Phew! I hope the others get out soon!

Wow, yes you got very lucky (and apparently very smart), congratulations. Those I talked to are supposed to fly out 7AM tomorrow morning, they're spending the night in Roanoke Airport.

I also strongly reccomend Gettysburg and Sewanee as saftey looks if you're intrested in W&L.

Myself, it was between Gburg and WnL in the end and one of my good friends is choosing between WnL & Sewanee as her top choice. A lot of people looked at WnL at Gettysburg from what I gathered when I did an overnight there.

Like I said, Gettysburg is very similar to W&L so it makes sense that people looking at one would look at the other as well. I gave Gettysburg a long look and loved it but decided that the academics were just not up to my standards - it would have made a great safety though if I needed one.

The University of Mary Washington is in Fredericksburg, VA. :) wow I didn't think I could ever correct Dima the all-knowing. (just kidding around, b/c you are so knowledgeable) just had to add that in....
It is in many ways like W&L, my brother attends and I have been accepted there. It has the same historical value and high acedemic standards.

That's why I said I wasn't sure ;) and besides, Fredericksburg is only about forty-five minutes to an hour north of Richmond on I-95.

Mary Washington is a great school I agree - it's standards are lower than W&L's as is the academic level (though not by too much). This comes from it being a public school. Of course the other side of that coin is that it is a much cheaper alternative to W&L - especially if you are from Virginia (which leads to another difference - about 66% of UMW students are from Virginia compared to only about 15% for W&L). Finally, although Mary Washington is no longer an all-girls school, the female: male ratio is still quite high, about 65:35.
