So Vanderbilt and Wake Forest still top my list, but I hear they are a LOT of work and just wondering if washington and lee is maybe a similar school with less work...what is w&l like? southern culture present?

what about furman?
what about william and mary?
what about maybe easier schools like elon or auburn?
(same questions)
...

Washington and Lee is an awsome private college with a beautiful campus. There is definitely a southern, preppy feel to this school. I have a close friend in attendance. Lot's of partying but lots of hard work too. This school prides it'self on close student faculty relations and the profs are known to be top notch. Washington and Lee is SMALL.

Don't even think about William and Mary unless you are used to hard work and are willing to kick it up a notch. That said, William and Mary is just the best, lots of learning and fun to be had!

BTW, Please explain what "Southern Culture" is exactly. Ive lived in Virginia my entire life and just can't figure this one out. At first I thought it was a "southern feel" as that relates to the landscaping typically found in the Southern States......................enlighten us, please. Hopefully it's not about a strong southern accent, or yes mam, no mam......................maybe it's about the weather??????

You'll hear the songs "Dixie" and "Shannandoah" played often at campus events. No kidding. Also, don't even think of saying a cross work about Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson. Alternatively, it's o.k. to knock George Washington and any other national figure from north of Richmond.

"Southern Culture" brings to mind apple pie, the flag and God, gentility, a slower pace, friendliness that northerners are suspcious of - is it genuine or is it part of manners?, and, in reference to colleges - frats and sororities. As a northerner who has visited Virginia several times over the past 12 months, it is hearing conversations about bible studies and baptisms everywhere, seeing lots of military support or uniforms, and way too polite drivers <g>. The accent is interpreted by some as charming by others as painful......Iti s a different culture in general than say, NY or Boston. The weather is certainly much nicer.</g>

Washington and Lee is a very demanding school both academically and socially. You must be very comfortable in your own skin with tremendous self-confidence. It is remote you will rarely leave campus. Southern culture is forced upon you. So be willing to accept it. The profs are excellent but haughty for the most part especially in the Humanities. The surrounding area is very boondocks but the campus facilities are tremendous. Athletics is key as well since the population is small and school spirit is strong. You must be very rah! rAH!

Birch45, just a quick question-where did you get your information and formulate this view of W&L? I am always astounded when people have not gone to a particular college and have such a personal take on it. Did you or a close relation attend? I have never heard anything about W&L that did not make you feel it was wonderful. The part about being comfortable in your own skin, It owuld seem more geared to NYU, IMO. What do you mean by that? After reading your reply, I would think twice. Thanks.
