It seems this year there are a very large amount of students being called in for supplement interviews, I've seen so many threads recently with student's asking about this.

Today I also got an email from a Harvard Alumni (A member of the Harvard Club of my local area), concerning a second interview which seemed particularly urgent as she wanted to see me asap (as in, the day of the email!).

I've read and comprehend the common wisdom in that these supplement interviews often are simply to expand on a particular focus of the student's (ie. ECs or a particular interest), and to gain more information on the applicant as the committee are probably on the cusp of a decision. Thus these interviews can only be taken as a good sign that the applicant is still in the running.

However, why now? It seems that this year, in particular has a very *high/I amount of these second interviews. Is this a new policy of Harvard's? Is it something about this year's crop of students? I suppose I just find this slightly strange, and as an applicant - a bit disconcerting.

On what basis do you conclude that anything is different this year? Every year there is a spate of Harvard second interviews. When that happens, it’s news, so people post about it. It’s clearly a sign that you are under serious consideration and that someone has a significant question. Given the date, of course it’s urgent. But nothing out of the ordinary seems to be going on.

I suppose I’m basing my impression on the many recent posts concerning second interviews lately.

I suppose I haven’t been on CC as long as you, and maybe aren’t as familiar with the cycles of College related happenings. That, and also I’m an international student, so I’m even less familiar with the normal proceedings.

Really, I don’t mean to presume to second guess the process - I have no idea what’s going on after all! I was wondering if indeed this was an unusual amount of second interviews, that’s all.

I’m pretty sure second interviews are for when there is a slight discrepancy between the applicant’s application and the results of the first interview. This is what I have heard from alumni.
