Why do so many schools have Jan 1,2, or 3 deadlines? Don't they know we don't get back to high school until around Jan 3? We won't be able to touchbase with our counselors and teachers for 2 weeks before sending the apps in. That's highly inconvenient. It means I have to send out all my recs and school stuff before going on break (about half a month before the deadline). praise to those schools (UNC, Wash U, etc) who have Jan 15 deadlines.

Yeah my school had to have everything in by Dec. 14th for Early Jan deadlines. Tough for some people.

It gives you the opportunity to finish up any of your own work (Common App, Supplement, Essay, SAT/ACT score report sending, writing samples, whatever).

Many schools require weeks in advance so people who have legitimate last minute problems and screw ups in packaging can be found and corrected.

i just love ho they have a deadline on a national holiday,, how stupid is that

That's why you don't procrastinate.

My thoughts exactly.

but explain why it is necessary to have a deadline on Jan 1st- a BIG national holiday, with no mail, etc

that is just poor planning on the colleges part, why even HAVE a deadline on a day like that

even the IRS switches do a "real" day with postal service and businesses open if the 15th falls on a weekend

Yeah, I agree that a holiday deadline is a tad bit silly. But most of the time, deadlines are almost archaic. Everyone is always encouraged to send stuff in weeks before the deadline. When someone is submitting something on the deadline, they always get slapped on the wrist for it. But, of course, deadlines are necessary.
