Out of curiosity, what's wrong with Thurston Hall? I haven't visited George Washington yet. Thurston gets a lot of grief. I visited the website but the stats seemed alright, so can someone tell me what's wrong with it? I'm missing something and I want to know what it is.

Nothing at all. In fact there are quite a few that want Thurston as their first choice. If you need a little peace and quiet now and then, you don’t want Thurston. On the other hand, if you are a total extrovert and thrive with people constantly around, then that is the dorm for you. (You may have to find an alternate place to study though).

Half the freshman class ends up in Thurston. S is an introvert who lives there this year. Not sure he’d choose it again but he’s done fine there & has had no trouble getting wrok done amidst the craziness.

Nothing is really wrong with Thurston, it’s just noisier. The higher the floor the noisier it is, but after the 1st 2 weeks, and when the honeymoon period is over, it gets quieter. It’s just the largest freshman dorm, therefore a little more partying goes on, but that is about it.

I would disagree about the dump statement. They are some beautiful rooms there, the only problem no kitchen, with the exception of a few rooms. Also, it’s the one with weekly maid service

im not saying the actual rooms are dumps… the gang of ppl constantly swarming and hanging outside make it a dump in my mind… dont get me wrong i want to have a good time… but not at thurston

1) Next year, they are converting Thurston quads into triples, giving you much more room.
2) Yes, Thurston is older and not as nice as some of the other freshmen dorms. But seriously, if you call it a “dump,” you’ve obviously never seen the freshman dorms at most universities. You get a private bathroom and walk-in closets, and don’t have to bunk your beds. Comparatively, it honestly is really, really nice for a freshman dorm.
3) Thurston isn’t for everyone, but it really has a worse rep than it deserves. Yes, it’s loud and there’s a lot of people around. But GW is a selective school and Thurston houses about half of the freshman class…they’re not ALL going to be crazy partiers who don’t care about class or anything. It gets very quiet around midterm/finals time, and you’ll find most students really do care about getting work done.

i agree with you. thurstonsounds like the ultimate college freshman experience. but also thye do have so many options that you can do what is best for your personality type.

does anyone know exactly how it works as far as the “themes” of each housing option?

Correction: ALL freshman dorms get maidservice - not just Thurston.

waveswatcher: Even though you are in the Elliott school, that doesn’t mean every single one of your classes is in the Elliott School building (I had two that met there last semester and one this semester). Pick your dorm based on location/room size/kitchen availability, etc. I’m in the Elliott school and I live in Madison, which is one of the smaller dorms. Personally, I LOVE it. There’s a kitchen on my floor, my room is huge, and it’s quiet. I also have friends in Crawford and Lafayette who like their rooms. But…Madison is the best. Ok that’s bias, but hey :)

Thanks spw - I’ve been thinking about Madison. I love the excitement of Thurston but I know my limits, and I think I could get caught up in the fun of Thurston and flunk out! lol I think it might be best for me to live in Madison and party in Thurston. Just trying on this responsible thing…
