what's yale like

i've applied this year, but i know that people who are accepted are accepted because (besides super good scores/grades/ec, etc) they fit in at yale and end up enjoying their experience for the most part. my brother is at yale and he enjoys it thoroughly.

i've heard a million things from my brother as well as combed through the yale website and other resources, but i'd like confirmation on what yale students are generally like despite all the diversity:

very intelligent, but also somewhat laidback (compared to a lot of cut throat kids at harvard)

friendly, and not really so pretentious unless they're one of the preppy rich kids who got in on their parents' merit

either ambitious, but not any vindictive way, or doesn't really have a big career plan set up yet

of course everyone is different, but i'd like to know if other yale students have gotten that kind of feel for the student body.

When I visited this year, the people at the information sessions and the tour guide fit that description pretty well - having traveled abroad and done research, but still unsure what exactly their futures held, even as upperclassmen. They all were also really laid-back and interesting, the kind of people it's fun to talk to. What current students say on this board matches that pretty well.

yale is like walking on marshmallows and eating the best food ever for dinner every day. that is yale.

You just described me.
I really don't think Yale wants any of the "grade grubbers" of high school and certainly not those who they think will be cutthroat competitive.
