For all of us who have to write essays, just pondering how wide the range will be of topics. You can include the "why" essays, too, if you want...

For Common App:

Most meaningful activity: Basketball! Four high schools, basketball's the only consistent thing with all of them and it bonded me!

Long essay: unsure, but THINK it'll be "Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you."
to which I'll write about my Asian thinking of age = what school grade/level you should be in, then realizing that being 19 when most seniors are 17 at my h.s. made me more accepting of people's differences and how everybody has different stories and histories. Especially when in 10th grade I was 15 and felt superior to the 17 years old classmate.

Carleton:
"From your reading, whether Dr. Seuss or Chaucer, what books or authors have particularly impressed you?"
Isaac Asimov for his unique and original stories of science fiction, and subtle story lines that seem quite obvious in hindsight. And, yes, Jude Deveraux, a ROMANCE novelist. I find her impressive because her characters are actually done in a 3-D fashion that each character makes the reader disgusted at times, likable at others.

Macalester:
". Describe a situation where you have had to work or closely associate with someone from a culture very different from your own. What challenges did you face and how did you resolve them? "
HARD time with this one. Different culture? From my school culture? Home culture? I don't know!!!!

Middlebury:
"Describe an experience in which your values were tested. How have you grown as a result of this experience? "
My time at Sunway College where I was depressed and suicidal. Hope I grew from it and learned that life CAN'T be planned! And that is it better to experience harshness in order to appreciate smoothness and sweetness of life.

Other universities essays are on their own application, but along the same line. :)

Most meaningful activity: Computers! More specifically, 3D animation and video production. been doing it since i was 13. altho never won any competitions (that's really sad).

i wrote the same title, and about me taking a gap year, and how everybody frowned upon it because we're Asians and taking a gap year is a "sad sad thing" to do.

Yeah, it's a little sad how Asian thinking is VERY rigid, concerning education. With one student at an public school in Malaysia, even when he skipped classes, failed, they still promoted him throughout the forms in secondary school because of the age "thing".

That's a good topic. Btw, in Bulgaria students graduate from high school at the age of 18/19. I'm now 17 but I'll be 18 when I graduate and most of my classmates will be 19. Let's face it, we're old :(

i just wrote my personal statement about my dreams... i dun know if these topics will take me to my dream college... but i wrote of how i live to my dreams for the common app thing.

for the influential experience on the common application I'll probably write about my summer job as a receptionist in a Bulgarian sea resort and how I made friends with people from all over the world and so on...

and my personal essay is over, but it's been very personal... and long 277 ove rht word limit of 500... will this create probs? do essays really need to stick to the wordlimit?

Barum: As someone who has never gone skiing, but heard of experienced skiers breaking bones on the diamond slopes I have to say - Cool! It would definitely be an experience. I hope you didn't break bones over it.

Sweta: 777 words might be too much. Maybe you could try cutting it down. Have someone read and edit it, if it isn't too personal for them? (Like a sibling, if you have any, or a best friend...)

Cotton_Candy: Wow. That is a truly unique experience, I would say. Hopefully the adcoms think so, too.

my common app essay is about politics and human rights

supp essay is about a hike i did in Year 9...and somehow i related it to life..heh did it at 11:30pm...now that i'm done it's 1:40 am.. woohoo..

Politics...I don't like politics...Yeah, I admit, I'm someone who likes and concentrates on her little world of friends and familiy...I never did understand politics or religious fervor... WHY??

Hey, banedon, I'll be willing to read it. Email or PM me. :D
