Well, Hook wasn't RSI and he didn't win Siemens so ha!

:(

:p

Yes but Hook exhibits strong leadership in his extra curriculars.

"Well, Hook wasn't RSI and he didn't win Siemens so ha!"

Hmm... These RSI and Siemens things seem so popular, that I dout they're even tip-factors. They're quite annoying, actually.

Oooooo. Someone's going to get you on that.

Can I please? :D

Do you know what Siemens and RSI are, Semper? Please do your homework before insulting accomplishments that you have no idea about. There's a 5% acceptance rate at RSI and 19 kids in the country make Siemens (national finals). They're popular in the sense that, sure, it's not a tip factor to apply to RSI or submit to Siemens. Duh. But getting accepted to RSI or making nationals at Siemens (or moreover, STS) is a huge accomplishment that always warrants a very close look, at any school. Saying something like that about Siemens or STS is very much equivalent, on the grown-up scale, to saying that people are annoyed by all those damned Nobel Prize awards that are so popular. :p

I can think of at least one person who got in EA who most likely was put in the deferred list before he placed at Siemens nationals. As for me, they gave me a much closer look after I placed 3rd at Siemens and I was probably just on the verge of getting in. These are huge accomplishments that no admissions committee scoffs at.

Not only are they great for the applications process (which isn't their primary purpose; rather an added +), but they provide immense intrinsic satisfaction--getting recognition and praise for A) doing something you love and B) making some sort of contribution to society.

At least, it shows when they look at your app. if your work was truly a labor of love. Believe or not not, some ppl do RSI for the sake of solely RSI. Just like some ppl are applying to Harvard for the sake of it; or the name; or for no reason at all.

PorSK--What bothers me most about Hook is that even though, sure, he's really accomplished and has great stats, I don't know if he stacks up to some other candidates who were deferred. I resent how he got in simply because he's a recruited athlete URM legacy from rural Montana.

Well you have to admit, his independent research in navigational systems and hover technology is pretty impressive. No Siemens, though, so I'm not too impressed.

Well, granted, he probably didn't even submit to Siemens. Not many people in his area even know about it. I think Hook just did his research out of sheer love for Evil Navigation, not so that he could win some award.

Is piracy still a crime? Does he need to include that on his app?

I think piracy is definitely a hook, simply because of its anachronistic nature.

And of course, fencing/dueling is an awesome EC.

I heard a rumor he made All-American for fencing, but was disqualified for using a real sword and sending some kid to the hospital. :

I'm sure it was accidental. His recs say he's couldn't hurt a fly if he wanted to. Oh, and I understand he's an Eagle Scout. Got badges in knot-tying along the way.

No no, it was "he couldn't hurt a fairy if he wanted to".

I think they changed that to avoid any possible hint of gay-bashing. Gotta keep it PC, remember.

Hook was actually a conscientous objector to that, being a staunch non-PC conservative, so he had them say "fairy".
