What's your major, and what career do you want?

Seems like everyone on CC has got it all figured out--just what they want to major in and exactly what they want to do as a career. As for me, I had no idea when I was applying to colleges and now as a 2010-er, I STILL don't know. So this is a post to see how many of you know, or think you know, what you want to do with your life, and why.

As for me, I'm going to the University of Virginia. I want to major in History, because it fascinates me, but I'm not sure--I might major in Political Science, English, or Anthropology. As for career, I've got no idea; none of those things really parlay into any specific career. I think I'd like to write, as a journalist, or a historian, or just an author, but particularly of nonfiction subjects. Eventually I'd like to have a family, and be a (mostly) stay-at-home mom.

Your turn.

I'm gonna major in international relations with a focus in European issues and European-American relations. Applying to Georgetown, Tufts, JHU, GW, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, American University in Paris, and UC Davis. I'll look for a job at the CIA, NATO, US Dept. of State, UN, or perhaps an International Airline like Air France, United, British Airways, or maybe an international sports organization like FIFA. Not sure if I'll go to grad school yet.

Majoring in physics. Hopefully going into academia, but if not, maybe some engineering firm will take me. I hope to look into new sources of cleaner energy.

If you want to be a "stay-at-home mom", then why are you going to college?

I'm going to major in mathematics, and from there I hope to either be a math professor at some elite college, a high school teacher at an inner-city school, or work for the FBI [don't ask me how I ended up with this option, I don't even know]. And Akajjred, good luck with college apps next year.

i want to major in biology and go into medicinal research. schools i plan to apply to (subject to change, but this is fairly solid) haverford, yale, rice, harvard, stanford, wesleyan, davidson, middleburry, whitman, st olaf, kenyon, UW and possibly williams (someone just suggested it to me and it looks like it could fit me, though if i add williams i might cross of another reach, such as harvard or stanford).

a2wolves6, she's going to a good school, so she's probably a very smart person, and probably someone who wants to be well educated. she can be a stay-at-home mom and still be knowlegable, no?

I want to major in media management or something business related. And then I eventually want to get into the business aspects of the entertainment industry. Maybe working for a movie company, tv station, or a record company.

Or to be safe go to law school and become an entertainment lawyer.

All that is still possible and you won't have to pay thousands of dollars.

If you're applying to Wesleyan, Middlebury, Davidson, and Kenyon, I would definitely suggest you applying to Williams as well, or perhaps Swarthmore. Also, don't worry about adding one more college, though if you add three of four then I would suggest you take off one or two. So, good luck with your future and enjoy your senior year.

i visited swarthmore and decided that i didn't want to apply. the academics and facilities were very impressive, but the students just seemed so stressed out.. nobody seemed very happy, and i noticed that everyone was walking around alone, people weren't hanging out in groups like at the other schools i visited. a friend of mine got in there and got all of those same vibes, and said that when she visited a class, everyone kind of stared off into space looking stressed before class started, and nobody talked to each other. thanks for the wishes of good luck, same goes to you :)

a2wolves6, i can see what you're saying, and i may agree with you, but semiserious might be financially sound enough to go to college without being too much in debt, or might just reaallly want a college education. or maybe she'll end up working part time and being a mom the rest of the time. who knows. i see your point though.

Thanks, though at least I've already gone through the whole app process. I totally get what you're saying about Swarthmore, seems reasonable, MIT had been exactly the same, everyone kept to themselves, students were tense [though I did visit a few weeks before finals, so hmmmm] though I must say that you have a very similar college selection to that of a very good friend of mine, and b/c of that may I also suggest Tufts to you.

i'm afraid of tufts because i heard a horror story from a friend of mine. he didn't get into any of the classes he wanted, he found the administration distant and felt like nobody was there to help him. i really want to go somewhere that will give me guidance if i need it, which is why i'm attracted to all of the small LAC's. thanks for the suggestion, though. tufts is definitely a very good school, i'm just not sure it's exactly what i'm looking for.

Got ya, and that's a bit unfortunate that that's what happened to your friend, though I must say that you collect horror stories, it's all good though b/c you need to see every college at its worst. Though, I hope it's going to go well for my two friends who are going in August. :/

I'm planning to study Comparative Literature, concentrating on English and Spanish--but I'm also interested in plain ol' English, linguistics, history, Latin American studies, classics, Spanish...

I want to be a print journalist :)

I'm majoring in Political Science. After that, I want to work for the government at some level or go into journalism.

Political science...a good pre-law major...

I'm double majoring in Philosophy and English. I'd like to go onto to get a JD or a JD/PhD in Philosophy and I'd focus on Applied Ethics. One day, I would like to be either a lawyer, a professor, and/or an author.

Accounting... Forensic Accountant

Thanks Tonyt and good luck to everybody else.

If you want to be a "stay-at-home mom", then why are you going to college?

Because I like to learn, I like to have fun, and I view college as a stepping stone to learning how to live on my own and manage myself indepedent of my rather overshadowing and overprotective family.

Money was never an issue...I could have thrown away ten times as much as I'm going to on education if I'd wanted to and my family wouldn't have even felt it. I'm very lucky in that regard.

311Griff, what on earth is a forensic accountant? Do you do dead people's taxes or something? ;)
