What's Your Opinion?

I'm a HS senior this year and UNC and UVA are my top choice schools, so in an effort to become better acquainted with both schools I'm asking anyone who is attending UVA, graduated from UVA, or has a child at UVA to give me your likes, dislikes, or experiences at the school. How are the class sizes? Professors? Is it easy to get involved? Anything would be helpful

Thank You

There was a thread recently on favorite things at UVA.

Class sizes - intro classes get up to 400 or 500 people, though there are plenty of classes capped at 40 as well. Upper level classes are usually max 40 people, with seminars much smaller. I think the large class size is good if you want to skip class or not pay attention or take it with your friends and usually they come with multiple choice tests. I think small classes are good for things like language classes. The ~40 size for math classes is good, it is small enough to ask questions but large enough that the professors typically just go through proofs so who cares how many people are in the class. I like both sizes for different reasons. I loved my 100+ person astronomy class, liked having 400+ people in classes where I was not thrilled with them (gen ed reqs), and loved having smaller classes where needed.

Professors depend on the major, there are lots of well known professors at UVA and they all hold office hours. Sciences are notorious for having international professors, at every research university in the country. I’m sure you can search for more on that.

Easy to get involved? …This is a 13,000+ student state school, we have, like, 500 clubs alone. There is always so much stuff going on. You can get involved in anything you want as long as you are willing to attend a meeting.

Thanks a lot I will defintly check out that blog
