I've received a letter from CMU ading to incoming students some towels, pillows and blankets alike. I know there are (at least) a few upperclassmen(and women) floating around here. Did any of you buy anything? like pillows? what's the quality?

No, I didn't buy them but I know people who did. They were generally guys who didn't care very much, on the parents' board, some have said the quality isn't very good. It's very easy to buy XL sheets at Bed, Bath, and Beyond or Linens & Things, and even in department stores, at this time of year. If you buy jersey sheets in twin size, they will probably stretch enough to fit XL matresses, which can save you $5-10.

I would just go to the Waterfront and buy your stuff at Target or something. Otherwise, you could just bring towels, pillows, blankets from home...

the problem is that I have to drag two fully-stuffed, oversized lugages half of the earth to CMU, pillows are too costly to put into the limited space of my lugages. Are there any of the stores mentioned above near CMU ? thanks~

They're not really close, but busses run from campus there. It takes 30-45 minutes on the bus, but the busses don't come very frequently.

CMU runs busses during frosh (I mean "first-year") orientation to the waterfront, and it's not uncommon for people to lug lamps, egg crates, and other giant things back on some of these busses, so that might be your best bet during orientation. Otherwise as KrazyKow said, busses run every hour or so on the weekends (every 45 minutes on weekdays) out to the Waterfront which is the mall.

As for the ValuePaks, I hear they're bad, but my roommate had a set and she had no problems with quality, so maybe the rumors are wrong.

FYI over in the Parents' forum most people seem satisfied with the quality of the RHL sheets. Also, we learned that you can get a higher thread count (250 vs 180) on some of the colors/patterns for a small additional fee.

very very helpful
great thanks ...

I found that the CMU packet for the Value Paks does not have a numerical length and width for the bed sheets, but it did mention that the bed sizes are "Extra Long". If I go to Bed, Bath & Beyond and ask for an extra long bed sheet, will they know exactly what size I'm looking for or do even the "extra long" sizes vary? Sorry for the silly question! I rarely shop for bedroom necessities, and I didn't really want to spend close to $150 to $200 on a bunch of crap I will most likely not use!

krabble they have extra long sheets in stock...lots of em depending on thread count and color...you shouldn't even have to ask as they are clearly displayed with the rest of the sheets...XL twin is an industry standard size just like twin, double, king, queen, etc

here is a link http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/sizeup_bedroom.asp

Plus it says in the housing letter that they accept packages August 14. So an option could be to order online and have your packages shipped directly to CMU.

XL mattresses come in a few different sizes, but there's pretty much one size of XL sheets, so it doesn't matter.
