I work at the on-campus vet clinic as part of the kennel staff. We have dogs and cats that serve as hands-on experience in classes, some cats and dogs loaned from local shelters, some retired greyhounds, and some retired research lab beagles that are given to the school each semester so they can all be adopted out at the end of the year. It’s pretty similar to volunteering at a shelter, but the protocols aren’t as strict since it’s the same animals all semester, so risk of contagion is pretty low, once they’re out of the initial quarantine. But I love it. At my school, all the animal science majors (vet science, vet tech, and pre-vet) can work there. It’s a really good way to cheer you up if you’re stressed about classes, even if a lot of it is really dirty work.

i currently work 2 WS jobs. One is a firewatch position in a gym. I basically walk around the building for 45min/hr looking for safety hazard as well as smoke coming from rooms. I also keep watch for the homeless who sometimes choose to use the shower facilities in the gym.

My other job is a janitor at the University Center (or student union) in order to complement my firewatch job. The firewatch position, I’m told, will not continue into the next quarter, so this janitorial position will allow me to earn my WS allotment. Also from the firewatch job, I only get 4hrs a week compared to the janitorial position of 9hrs. The pay difference is not that great: 8.5/hr at the janitorial compared to 9/hr at the firewatch.

I had many jobs, but my primary workstudy job (20 hrs/week) was being an ITA. It was basically a lab staffing/computer troubleshooting/networking/case handling position. It was great because I made a lot of friends with fellow ITA members and met even more people who happened to show up in the labs to either surf the net/do homework/etc.
