When appealing financial aid, should the student or parent initiate contact??

I’ve been admitted to several schools, but the sticker price is waaay too much for my family. The EFC was way off, and my parents would have to take out loans, postpone retirement, and get second jobs just to meet the EFC.

The question is whether I should directly contact financial aid/admission offices to talk about aid and scholarships, or if my mom should do it. Do colleges look more favorably on one or the other?? Thanks.

I honestly don’t believe it matters much, but unless there’s been some mistake or something that wasn’t considered or explained well on your FAid forms, chances of changes are not good. What is your instate public U? That’s the place most likely to give you the best package.

I think the person who knows the most about the finances should do it. At our house, it was me (parent). My daughter asked me to do all the financial things, including talking to her coach. She just didn’t have the knowledge of my job, my income, my retirement savings, etc. It’s hard enough to get the right FA person on the phone/email. It’s not the time to play telephone tag or have to keep ‘finding out’ the info from your parents.

You could also make a joint call.
