Will it make a difference in admissions? If you don't will it be difficult to transfer into the department?

I applied to CMU this last cycle, and on the Common App they ask which school you’re applying to (SCS, CIT, etc.). The various schools have different acceptance rates with the School of Computer Science having the lowest. My recommendation would be to put the SCS as your first choice, and then put other schools as your second and third choice in case you don’t get in. If you’re denied by SCS, but get into another school and still decide to attend, you can still transfer into SCS. I don’t know what the requirements are for an internal transfer though, sorry.

You might have better luck posting here: <a href=“Carnegie Mellon University - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/carnegie-mellon-university/

Thanks @Repede. I decided to post here because there’s not much activity on the cmu page. Thanks

Yes, it makes a difference. Transfer is difficult, but there are a few each year. The CMU CS program has an acceptance rate down there with Stanford at 5%, tough stuff. They ask specifically for you to rank the schools you want, so admissions does take it into account.

^^^

Are the separate acceptance rates of the various Schools and Colleges published anywhere? Thanks.
