does it matter if you are in the mid-50% SAT range of the school or better? does being better than it really up your chances of getting accepted or not really?

I really want to know this too. Any thoughts? (especially for top tier schools)

I'm in the same position as both of you, but I believe that to be competitive you should at least be in the middle 50%. That's when you know that you will not be rejected from a school based on your standardized test scores. Of course, the bigger the better in terms of scores. I'm just shooting for the lower end of the 50%, so I can stay in range.

I would guess that the majority of applicants for top tier schools are already in the mid 50% SAT range. Having gotten waitlisted at places where I was in the top 25%, I would say that it doesn't "really up your chances."

If you're applying to a state school OOS, then I've heard it helps being above the top 75%- almost a requirement.

Being at 50% is nice and if you're really far above it might help balance out a weaker section of your application, but like somedumbnoob said, it doesn't change your chances significantly for upper tier schools.
