When are admission decisions coming?

Oh Wow. Thanks a lot for providing me the perspective! Do you mind sharing what that famous class is? However, do you think there is a strong correlation between high GPAs and hiring OR is GPA pretty much irrelevant at SCS? Also, if you don’t mind sharing, for which companies have you interned/worked for? Sorry, I have another general question: How much do we need to spend alone learning new technical things for job/internship interviews? I mean, I don’t think SCS students have too much time learning new things other than trying to understand what is going in class, which might not necessarily help tackling interview questions. Thanks!

I’m sure that if your GPA is high, it’s going to stand out, no matter what major you’re in. However, you don’t want your grades to be high and when you get to the interview, you can’t answer simple things. Honestly, if you’re getting high grades, you should be smart enough to pass the interviews. But, a lot of top companies like to ask puzzles for job interviews instead of generic “let me see if you paid attention in class” type of questions.

I’d rather not post ones I’ve worked at for anonymity reasons, but I’ve pretty much tried interviewing with both top and start up companies.
Technical stuff can be learned in class most of the time, but you really shouldn’t worry about it now. My best suggestion is do what everyone else does: start going to job fairs in freshman year. It’s probably highly unlikely you’ll get the job(s) you want, but it’s a really great experience to talk to recruiters and go through interviews. After a few job fairs you get the hang of it and will know what type of questions to expect and how to interact with recruiters so you bring attention to yourself. And once you know what they want and realize you weren’t taught anything on those topics, it’s your responsibility to learn them yourself.

EDIT: Don’t want to mention the companies I worked for because I’m not a CS major, so I didn’t go for ones like Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc. If that’s what you want to hear haha

Hi i am an international student from Canada…
For international student, you can choose to have your decision mailed by DHL or Fedex.

So I did choose DHL, and today it shows that “Shipment picked up”…
it even shows how much it weighs … which means I can probably tell wether it’s a rejection letter or admission package by the weight…
can someone confirm it? I am pretty nervous right now :/

Which school did you apply to?

I wonder if you guys can predict my decision. I haven’t put in any payment details yet. With regard to express delivery, its asking 64 if I want to use FedEx and 56 if I want to use DHL. Now I remember reading 99 means accept and 64 means reject but that was back when CMU used UPS. Will I pay and then need to do the weight thing to check (where presumably 1.5 or so means accept and .5 means reject) or is this enough? Also, what happens if you’re wait listed or if you got into your second choice school… what are the weight and price factors like in those cases?

Thanks

Whoops sorry double post

I am not waiting for CMU, but I called them about something else today and they mentioned that they are mailing decisions on March 24, 2014. Hope that’s helpful (and hope they gave me accurate info!)

If they are going mail decisions on March 24 that means results are going to be available online starting from March 28.

H&SS was changed to Dietrich College of H&SS in late 2011 when the late Bill Dietrich donated $265 M to the University.

At about the same time he also made a very large gift to the University of Pittsburgh.

@nemojin I’m an international student and chose DHL as well and it shows shipment picked up. May I know how much does your document weigh?

@miaoziwee mine’s 0.5 lbs… according to last year all DHL packages are 0.5 lbs regardless of whats inside … only FedEx’ll show u weather its an acceptance package or rejection letter. At least that’s what I heard.

@nemojin thanks for the info. Let’s hope for the best :)

So this means I’ll have to order excess in order to know my decision? Damn.

Tomorrow is the deadline day for ordering express delivery btw, in case anyone in wondering.

@trenchlord chill! You’ll get your decision by the 28th latest… No point wasting $60

^ I agree. Unless it somehow affects another college’s decision/scholarship/etc. As in, if CMU is your reach and your second choice has accepted you and the deadline to respond to that college is before the 28th or something…

On CMU admissions twitter, they said the countdown for mailing the decision was around the corner (they said this on Wed. lol). I have a feeling they will be starting the countdown tomorrow, and I also think they are going to mail decisions sometime this week, which means online decisions will be available on Sunday (like ED) or early next week!

BTW, anyone know how many people applied RD for SCS and how many people CMU admitted?
Also curious to know: how big is envelope if the result is an acceptance, reject, waitlist :D

Yeah, I’m not going to. Sure it would be much easier on my heart in case I got an acceptance letter from cmu before ivy day but I’m way too young to spend even 60 dollars on heartcare.

Pretty sure last year the figure is closer to 400 out of 5000 for SCS.
I applied for SCS, Tepper and IS, so fingers crossed for myself and for all of you!

BTW does anyone know how CMU notify applicants about decisions online? Emails?

My boyfriend applied to CMU for ED this year and got into their Electrical Engineering program. He first found out online, and then got his official letter in the mail, which was just a small envelope. He told me that if he got that small envelope first before checking online, he would’ve thought he was getting rejected haha. I’m not sure though if they’re going to be doing small envelopes again for RD, but it’s possible?

I remember getting a fat envelope for waitlist…
