my sister goes to dartmouth and found out because the dartmouth alumni club of eastern new york sent her their holiday party invite.

this year, the holiday party is the 14th, which is relatively early... i hope i get my decision before then, though... cuz i'm going to the party with my sister, and that would be awkward if i got rejected the next day.

Instantly I thought the mention of the holiday party would aid in deducing the date. ok.. I'm starting new thread to obsess and offer insight and opinion.

I say they let us know tomorrow. About the decision date, that is. I have heard that the Ivies like to send the preliminary emails the first week of December (and if we're talking week days, it ends tomorrow). Also, if we do get them tomorrow, I'm betting we get the decisions Friday, the 12th. I mean, who tells you when it will be 6 days before? That would just be silly.

Getting the invite to the NJ party means nothing regarding an admissions decision. It says on the bottom of this year's email that the email is sent to all applicants and is not to be taken as an indication of admission's status.

still no word on what day decisions will be released - maybe they don't actually know yet, and if they finish early they'll release them next week, but if they don't, not until the 15th?

Last year, if they were actually released on the 12th last year, that was a Wednesday (the 15th in 2007 was a Saturday). This year, the 15th falls on a Monday. In looking from their point of view and trying to ascertain which would be better, I come up with three reasonable scenarios.

A) Next Wednesday because if there are any email issues, they have two days to fix them. (check to make sure whatever email address they have is right) Plus, you can share the good news with classmates and college counselor! Or cry in their office away from the glare of parents/friends.

B) Actually the 15th, which gives those in admissions a really quiet weekend where the decisions are already made, but you can't bug them by offering additional info if you've been deferred.

C) Friday the 12th because YOU have the weekend then to accept the answer before bugging them on Monday morning.

There is an old saying (especially old now that so much is done online) that the happiest time for college admissions is when the accept/deny envelopes have left their office but haven't yet reached their destinations. :)

I'd choose the 12th again in their position. Last year they chose late afternoon, right before the close of business. I picture them hitting send and running for the door....no phones to answer until Monday, by which time the angry have calmed down!

That would be my guess as well. Waiting until the 15th is almost like daring the entire internet to crash. Gives me the shivers just to imagine it.

Waiting until the 15th would be unbearable. Not only would we have an entire weekend to stress during, but then a whole other day. If they put them up the 15th I guarantee my weekend will be a total waste of my time.

Last year at DS's high school, a mother was there to share Yale's news with her DD. Her DD, a legacy, was deferred and the mother went to the counselor's office, picked up the phone and started screaming at a Yale adcom for all to hear! I would imagine these schools must have strategies to deal with the situations they face each year...

Oh my word. My 15 year old Daughter cringes when I show up at school to attend parent association meetings!! I can just imagine the utter humiliation this girl felt. I take it they ended up rejecting?
