When are Likely Letters sent out?

Does anyone know if Duke has sent out any likely letters this year, or when they probably will (based on past years)?

When I was a pre-frosh (back in 05) I got one in late February/early March.

How many do they send out?

I have no idea. Sorry.

I was one of the likely letter recipients. They came out in early March (although I got mine somewhat after everyone else). There were exactly 350 sent out that year. Keep in mind that likely letters are a strategic element of admissions - designed to attract students who might go elsewhere. Don't worry if you don't get one.

knightshield... if you got your letter after everyone else, and they got theirs in the beginning of march, then you must have recieved yours only a few days before you got your admissions decision from Duke anyways!

are many of the people who get likely letters offered merit scholarships?

about 350 letters get sent out, and if i remember correctly only 50 finalists are picked. i am not sure about the merit scholarship finalist number but the 350 number is accurate (at least for last year).

also, i noticed that last year at least one person got a likely letter later on (separate from the initial 350), so that's something to think about.

Heh...sorry to sound ignorant here, but what exactly are likely letters? Are they letters to say that you have a chance at a scholarship?

When a university sends a likely letter to an individual, it essentially implies that it will most likely grant you admission -- hence "likely."

So the only difference between a likely letter and an actual admittance letter is that it arrives earlier?

yes, this is true. i don't know of anyone who got a likely from a college who wasn't ultimately accepted. i guess one has to really screw up in the next two months for there to be consequences.

Not to scare anybody, but I've heard of several people who applied EA to UNC-Chapel Hill this year who got likely letters, but got deferred to regular decision...but that's the only time I've heard of people getting a likely letter then not getting accepted.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what exactly do likely letters say? (I'm assuming it's not "Hey! Guess what? You're accepted!".) Just curious, if anyone's gotten one and cares to share.

^My unc likely letter said that I was an "outstanding applicant" and that I'd "make a great addition to the school," and then continued on about how they couldn't notify anyone officially until January.

That thread from last year talks a bit about whats in duke's likely letters. Most of them started receiving them in early February.

What qualifies you to receive one? I'm not a recruited athlete, but someone mentioned that they are used "strategically." Does this mean they will be sent to highly qualified candidates who are more likely to go to a different school? I am from the Northeast and submitted a 34 ACT (not really all that high for Duke but anyways...) do I stand any chance whatsoever of getting a likely letter?

johnnyhoward, yes.

Last year highly qualified candidates (who did end up going
to other schools) got the likely letters based on high SAT or ACT scores coupled with near perfect GPA and decent ECs.

They got a letter saying something like "...you are one of the top 350
applicants...." or something like that and a paid trip to visit Duke. I believe
at Duke this automatically short lists you for scholarship?

I was amazed to hear about the outstanding way Duke treated their
likelies last year. In fact from what I know, but for severe parental
pressure, the kids who did not end up in Duke very badly wanted to
go there.

:)

Scholarships are sometimes given to students who get Likely Letters. There are about 30 scholarships, most of which are designated to those coming from North Carolina. So the chances are really small. However, the free trip is real and nice, although I ended up not going on it due to committments at schools.

sorry to butt in on this thread, but i'm guessing that if i just sent my 2nd SAT II score (from the Dec testing) yesterday, duke probably won't be able to consider my app in time for these "likely letters" right?

I don't think one SAT II score will affect your chances either way...
