When are Merit Finalists named?

Hey guys,

I just wanted to know when the NMSC will officially name finalists and send letters to their homes (or at least notify their principals). I know it's sometime in February, I just don't know when!

I think they mail out letters to schools on 2/2 and then letters to students' homes on 2/7.

My counselor pulled me in today.

He told me that I got the Finalist.

But then he also told me I got a D in AP Calculus last semester.

Please shoot me now.

REALLY? it's already out?

omg!!! this makes me nervous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gatoroboto--How did you manage that? Mazel tov on the NMF ... so sorry about calculus. My daughter is still waiting to hear if she's a finalist. I suspect she will be, but it's not good to take anything for granted.

haha yeah we're still waiting over here too!
The wait is killing me!

I'm not sure if my counselor was supposed to tell me this early. Basically I went into his office to ask about my calculus grade and before I sat down, he pulled it out and told me I advanced to finalist standing. Then he told me the bad news after I was happy and everything.

So the school isn't supposed to notify us as soon as they find out?!

oh, they send out mail to the homes tomorrow, :] everyone calm down.

Plus, if you didn't advance to the Finalist status, they would have sent you a letter in January (I don't really get why they send out "rejection" letters before acceptance ones >>; weird).

haha no I just think it's funny that the school knows but they would keep it a big secret.

wait... so it's def. true that rejection letters are already out??? cause that would make me SO HAPPY (since I didn't get a rejection letter)...

ps what distinguishes finalists from semifinalists?

The requirements for finalist status are pretty simple: complete and submit the application, have decent grades and score relatively high on the SAT.

Yea, and heck, some colleges are so generous if you put them as your top choice.

yeah i think if we didnt get rejection letters by now, we're finalists.

my friend, unfortunately, got a rejection letter that said it was due to her grades. back in jan. but shes the only one i know of.

My S got a letter from our school board in late January notifying him that he is an NMF. They invited the NMFs in our county to the next board meeting to receive some sort of certificate or something. I know the info is out there (even if the NMFs themselves aren't getting it) because some students have gotten letters from colleges they applied to saying, "Congratulations on becoming a finalist!" (or something to that effect).

Agreed. The college I put was not my my top choice, but the only one that I am applying to that sponsors this scholarship.

so when are schools officially allowed to release this info to NMFs?

Did anyone get the letter yet?

Look over on parent's forum - lots of kids getting notified by their principals. Letters were mailed to school principals on February 2nd. They were also mailed to finalists' homes yesterday, February 7th. Our daughter was notified by her principal yesterday (Wednesday) in Kansas.
