When are notifications mailed out for National Merit Finalist Scholars this year? I know I'm a finalist, but what about the moolahh?

When did you take the PSAT: 2009 or 2010?

If you took the PSAT in 2009 (attending college as freshman in 2011) you would have heard by now if you are getting any scholarship, unless you are waiting for a college scholarship.

Not everyone gets a scholarship, in fact the previous year (2010), there were 15075 finalists and only 8292 received merit scholarships (around 55%). There are threads on NMF strategy. Which college are you going to and do they give NM scholarships? If you college gives NM scholarships, that is your best bet but you need to act fast.

National Merit $2500 scholarships have already been sent out (March). College scholarships will be sent out on Wednesday (April 27th is the date I think) but you only get offered those if you picked a sponsor college as your top choice. Corporate scholarships have also already been notified (March). So I hope you put a sponsor college as your top choice!

Got my letter today.
I will get $1,000/year … so now I can change the entry on my CV from NM Finalist to Scholar.

My son received his letter today too - $2000/year from Fordham. Very exciting!

Our second son just opened is letter for a $2,000/yr National Merit Scholarship at Auburn. His brother is also a National Merit finalist at Auburn (freshman), but he “only” got the $1,000/yr stipend. We’re grateful for both and thankful for our two boys’ opportunities at Auburn.

I already got a letter offering me full tuition plus from my school for being a NMF. I also got the 2500 NM scholarship letter in Marchish. Should I expect another letter?

To those who got letters, did they come from the school or from National Merit? Thanks!

^, The letter was sent directly from the NMSC. It’s three pages + a yellow reply envelope. The reply deadline is May 6, but it includes a fax option. They will make all the names public on May 25th, if you reply by the deadline.

Thanks plumazul! Wow May 6 is around the corner and son hasn’t received any letter yet. Congrats to all those who received notifications!

D1’s letter came in today’s mail. $1K per year from U of Minnesota. The school had notified us back in March that she’d be getting it, but it’s still nice to get the “official” notification from NMSC.

I got mine today! $2,000/year! They did make you cut it a little short though with the reply deadline, with Sunday being a no mail day, my response won’t go out until the 2nd! Hope it makes it by the 6th! We will have our names released to the papers May 25th!

Daughter’s college-sponsored award letter arrived today from NMSC! With the short turnaround time, she plans to fax it tomorrow, then call early in the week to make sure they got it. Congratulations to all the National Merit Scholars!

My daughter is a finalist. Just filled out the yellow postcard and named Wash U as her first choice school. Wash U has told her she will receive 2000/year for being a finalist. Does that mean she will not receive a scholar award? She has not received any letter.

That is the scholar award. Your D is now a National Merit Scholarship winner and the scholarship is given by the school but she will get it from NMSC. Once you send that yellow post card in (you could have faxed it if you wished), NMSC on receipt will inform Wash U that Wash U is your D’s first choice. Wash U will then tell NMSC that they have awarded a scholarship of $2000 a year to you and then only will NMSC send you a letter. So it may take about 2-3 weeks before you get it.

Thanks for clearing that up, mazewanderer. I’m still alittle confused about the one time $2500 award, but it sounds like you can’t receive both.

I am not totally sure but I believe you get the $2,500 one-time scholarship in at least two cases.

1) if the school your s/d is attending is NOT a sponsor college you will receive a one time scholarship of $2,500 (Be aware that if you have any needs-based financial aide you may have to choose either the scholarship or the aide in some cases)

2) if your s/d is a NMS and the college is a sponsor college (awards are needs-based and vary from $1,000 to 2,000 per year)… but if your s/d is offered a full MERIT scholarship then you will only be offered a one-time $2,500 scholarship. This is the case for my s who is attending rose-hulman institute of technology (RHIT) … he was awarded a full time 4/yr merit scholarship from RH … the scholarship pays for room, board, tuition and a lap top but does not pay for books or additional classes. He selected RHIT as his sponsor school and was awarded a one-time $2,500 scholarship from NMCS that he will receive this Fall from the NMCS and when RHIT receives the $2,500 they will apply it to his financial account.

There may be other cases too … I’d be interested to read about other s/d $2,500 awards … or clarification on my post. See below for a few links of info I found …

Thanks!!!

Yey! Son received his letter yesterday! He gets 2,000/year, going to SLU. Wish I can tell everyone I know here, so proud of him, but will have to wait till May 25.

Daughter received the letter from NMSC yesterday, $1000/year at the University of Maine. This is in addition to the $8400/year merit money they offered her with the acceptance letter back in December. That just about covers in-state tuition.

Congratulations to all the NM Scholars!

qafa34, the 2500 is not guaranteed from NMSC. If you are not getting a college sponsored award, then it is up to NMSC to award the 2500. Not all finalists become scholars. To become a scholar, you either get the college award, or they give some 2500 one time awards. Interestingly enough, it seems as if more colleges are awarding for NMF every year, as when my brother was a NMF the same college I am going to do not award 2000/year, but he was one who received 2500.
