I am an incoming freshman currently looking for a federal work study job on campus. However, after searching for job listings on the cornell website (http://studentjobs.seo.cornell.edu/sjp/jobSearch.htm), there doesn't seem to be many choices/many are only open to older students.

I've heard that there are usually many jobs available, especially in dining and libraries, so when are those usually up on the website?

Also, will my lack of job experience hurt me in getting a job? I haven't had a job in 2 years as I usually spend my summers doing volunteer work. I'm not looking into any specialized field...even filing will suffice.

Thanks for any input

The Office of Financial Aid told me that new job listings start being posted in early August.

When should we apply for work study jobs?

The majority of job listings are posted closer to O-Week. I recall applying during the first couple of weeks of school, which was quite stressful considering it was also the start of classes and my new life at Cornell! I’d recommend applying early and to a few different places that interest you because some jobs are more competitive.

If you are interested in a particular job, perhaps you could email someone in that department expressing your interest and how to apply. Your enthusiasm will shine through to the employer before even stepping onto campus and will help putting your foot into the door.

I don’t think that your lack of job experience will necessarily hurt you. Many of the student jobs at Cornell are academically-oriented, so if you’re applying for a job at the Johnson Museum, for instance, it would obviously be helpful to show your interest in art.

You had mentioned that you volunteer during the summer. If you are interested in public service, my friend worked for the Cornell Public Service Center and got paid for community service. Perhaps you could contact them to see what kind of opportunities are available.

Another thing to be aware of are jobs that give preference to those with Federal Work Study or those who only hire students with Federal Work Study eligibility. If you do not have FWS, then finding a job may be a bit more difficult. Good luck!
