When are you arriving for Fall?

My son and niece want to go to be in Gainesville on August 16th which is the Thursday before classes start.

Isnt this a bit early???

My apartment’s lease begins on the 18th of August, so that’s when I’ll be going. :)

The 17th is the first day I can move into my dorm, I will probably do it then or on the 18th.

I want to get settled in and comfortable before classes start.

Classes don’t start until the 22nd and folks can move into their dorms starting the 17th

I personally like getting moved on early and out of the way, so Im going back the 17th and be at 10AM for check in

Your son and niece probably have appointments to check in to their dorms by now. The appointments start on Friday, Aug 17th, at 8 a.m. and go through the weekend, I believe. The students can sign up online, and choose a 2-hour time slot in which to check in to the dorm and get their keys (my daughter’s is 8/17/12 between noon and 2 p.m.).

The students can move in at their leisure anytime after they check in and get their keys. So we chose a check-in time on the first day, and figured we’d just watch and see when the dorms and parking lots are less crowded and move her in then.

There are open check-in times each night from 6 -10 p.m., and all day starting on Monday (8/20) for those who don’t want to choose an appt time. Good luck to all of us!!! LOL

So does anyone know what the move in process is like? What happens, how long does it take, etc? Do they inspect your stuff or your room during or after move in (not that I’m trying to sneak anything in, I’m just curious.)?

Housing checks you in by checking your student ID, giving you your keys and key card and that’s it!

No inspection! Although, checking in can take awhile since a LOT of ppl move in around the same time during the first few days.

D moved into Rawlings this summer …interesting move in… You literally unload all student’s stuff to the curb and then move their items into the ground floor of the building. We waited In a short line to move all her stuff onto a freight elevator. A RA rides with you to your floor. Once on the floor you remove all items from freight elevator into hallway. The move in required 3 people…sure hope it is not raining on fall move in day…

In my D’s dorm they inspected the rooms a few days after check in to make sure you do not have too many electrical items plugged in… I am not sure if they check for anything else

I’m moving into Thomas, which I don’t believe has an elevator. This should be fun!

Just picture checking in to a hotel. It’s not a big deal.
And yes, there’s a fire safety inspection the first week or so, to make sure you don’t have too many things plugged in. Takes like 30 seconds. If they are ever going to inspect your rooms for whatveer reason they post it up, email you, notify you etc in advance. No suprises.

Im moving in the 16th. I stupidly signed up for early moving in, so now I have to drag all the freshman’s stuff all over campus.

I wouldnt worry about the inspections my RA never did them. Plus I had one plug on my side (my roommate had 2). Honestly Im suprised by bed didnt catch fire since I had extension cords and surge protectors running up against the length of it. I would have fried the plug but luckily my roommate let me plug my fridge in one of his plugs.

propwash: my daughter’s also moving into Thomas. She’s a Freshman. Do you know if all of the rooms have sinks? I think she’s on the 1st floor.

I don’t think so, but I’m not sure.

Thomas isn’t laid out in the typical manner of most other dorm buildings though, it is set up in ‘sections’ rather than floors. Each section has it’s own entrance and a few rooms per floor, but doesn’t connect to the other sections as far as I know.
