Hello!
As you can see, I’m a new member, but I’ve relied on this website for most of my high school/college related questions. This website (and all those involved in making it what it is) is amazing! That being said, I want to ask a question regarding when I can apply to UPitt. I’ve seen so many different dates. Some apply in June, while others apply in January. The website is not helpful at all.
Also, there is no essay, correct? It’s just 3 140-character questions, right?
Thank you!
I attended a Program at Pitt that allowed all of those students to apply as early as the first week in August and they usually get back to you with a decision in 3 weeks. It is not common app so there are three essay questions two are 140 characters and the third one is the most important essay that tells a little about yourself it’s like 5000 characters or something like that. I applied at the end of August and heard back in the middle of September. There should be dates in deadlines on the website about applying or email an admissions counselor they would be more than happy to answer your questions.
Pitt is a rolling admission university. That means they start reviewing and accepting students immediately. In this situation it is normally to your advantage to apply earlier in the session. If there are any programs that are especially competitive to get into, you want your application there early. I have also heard that it is an advantage in consideration for merit scholarships. I know it was 3 years ago when my oldest D was applying, but last year there was conflicting opinions on that. We were told to try to have everything in by October. Good luck!
Thanks to both! Can you specify when? I know madpowell96 said end of August, but what do you mean?
You can submit your application starting in August but you need to have everything done which includes having the SAT/ACT score that you want, your references, having a transcript, and completing the application. That can be hard to accomplish in August with your HS being closed and teachers unavailable. Start working on the process now, line up your recommendations, get a SAT/ACT score that you are happy with, work on answers to the short questions on the application. In the early fall, when you have everything you need and can present the best possible application, then you submit it.
My daughter applied in july and then throughout the early fall updated her application with new scores or resume additions. She would email admissions with info and they would put updates into her file. Get it done early, it is one item off your senior year to do list!
Thanks! Do you know how long the 3rd essay has to be? I know the first two are 140 characters, but it doesn’t specify the third.
@scarednexcited, The application will be changing. There will be different essays and requirements. It will be open in late summer. It wouldn’t be advisable for you to start on any essays now as it is likely the topics/requirements will change. Just enjoy your summer!
In the meantime, if you would like to learn more about Pitt (and get your application fee waived), I would encourage you to visit campus during one of our summer Open Houses! https://oafa.pitt.edu/visit/open-houses/
Best of luck,

Yes, I would recommend a campus visit!
Also if you want to be reviewed for possible merit scholarships make sure your supplemental info (recommendations, essay, list of EC) are received by Pitt before the scores and transcript, because when the committee has all of the required items (application, fee, test scores, transcript) they can start reviewing your file.
IIRC the scholarship committee doesn’t begin meeting until AFTER the admissions committee (i.e. I think they start reviewing closer to September/October at the earliest). So you definitely want to get your basics in for admissions but you have a little bit of leeway before you need the full package for scholarship consideration.
Also remember the scholarship committee only meets once a week so you have a bit of leeway there as it takes them much longer to go through all the applications they receive.
I might be wrong, just repeating what we were told on our campus visit.
@mommdc, @AwesomeOpossum, @scarednexcited,
I would encourage you to plan on having everything ready to submit together or as close as possible. Our application is undergoing some revision this summer and I am not sure how the process of submitting supplemental materials will or will not be adjusted. In the meantime, visit Pitt, enjoy your summer, etc. If you join our email list or reach out on social media, we will reach out in late summer when the new application is posted!

@hailtopitt1787 I am extremely interested in Pitt too, but I can’t visit until after I am admitted (which I hopefully will be) because I live too far away. How do I join the email list? I tried looking online but there many different lists to sign up for and none of them seemed like they were for prospective students.
On the Pitt admissions website you can click Request Info on the sidebar and fill out that form and you will be added to our list! oafa.pitt.edu
