Please refrain from criticizing or questioning my decision but I've had a lot of time to think about it and I definitely know Engineering isn't right for me. I'd already called the Internal Transfer Division office & Engineering advising office and the former said I could probably transfer after my 1st semester while the latter said I'd probably need to stay at Engineering for a year. Anyone have any personal experiences/know of anyone who transferred?

I'm looking into majoring in European or American History so that'll be quite a big switch. I'm also Premed so at least my Math and Science courses will be relevant but that means I'll be wasting a lot of time and money on things not even relevant to my major .. any help would be greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine was in COE last fall…she wanted to transfer to CAS, so she took a semester off in the spring and took classes at a community college. She expected to come back this fall, but for some reason she was told that she wouldn’t be able to transfer into CAS until Spring 2011.

I don’t know all the details; I’m just relating one person’s experience. The reason why she couldn’t immediately transfer into CAS had something to do with taking CAS classes/fulfilling requirements. Her case could very well be a rare one.

you can transfer after your first semester, however, you have to spend a “probationary” semester in the Internal Transfer Division with an advisor there. After getting a decent semester in CAS classes in that semester, you will be transferred into Arts. After a year at Cornell in Engineering, you can apply for “direct transfer” instead, but all freshmen are required to spend the semester in the Transfer Division.

(I transferred from COE to CAS my sophomore year)

What seuferk said was perfect. I also made the decision summer before freshman year to transfer from COE to A&S. You turn in an application with an essay and a recommendation first semester, and then during second semester you’re in the Internal Transfer Division. If you get a 3.0 GPA while in ITD, you’ll be in A&S by sophomore year (and your semester in ITD counts as a semester in A&S).

If you’re positive about this choice, you don’t have to take any of the engineering courses…take anything you want, really, you’re not locked into taking the basic engineering schedule AT ALL. :P
