When can you remove schools to put more than 10 schools on FAFSA?

Do you have to call each and every Financial Aid office to see if they have received it? I called FAFSA twice and they said once I have my SAR, all the schools listed will have access to my FAFSA, regardless of if I still have them on my list. However, from another friend he said when he called, the FAFSA guy told him to call each school to make sure they have downloaded it....which one is right?

FAFSA told me that once it has been processed, it is all good and I can go ahead and remove old schools and add in new ones.

Once it’s been processed it’s all good.

Ok, so even if I delete those first 10, they will still have access to my info? I just dont get why different people would get different responses from FAFSA.

ALSO, you are very helpful sir/m’am. I do have one other question though–when deleting schools, can I just erase ALL of the first 10 to avoid confusion? I’ve heard some people say the way to do it is to delete only as many as you need to. For example, if applying to 15 schools delete only 5 of the original 10. Is it ok for me to delete ALL of the original 10 and have them in separate batches?

Thank you so much!

Well, I don’t know why some people will give you different answers, but if you called FAFSA and they told you it was fine once your first FAFSA submission had been processed, and on the FAFSA website it says the same thing, then I don’t know why you’d worry overmuch about something a friend told you.

Students have been doing this for years, and no disasters have happened that I’ve ever heard about.

It won’t create any confusion if you delete all 10 of your previous schools or just a few of them. Basically once the FAFSA is processed the schools you listed are able to download your FAFSA information. It doesn’t disappear for College X just because you remove College X from the corrected FAFSA and replace it with College Y.

If you don’t delete College X when you add College Y, College X will still be downloading the same information … it’s not like they’re going to be stymied by a corrected FAFSA being submitted. They’ll download the latest corrected version they have access to.

This thing is confusing to many students, BTW. And a lot of students apply to more than 10 schools these days. I wish the FAFSA would just add more slots for schools in the first place!

YES! I second that. From previous forums it seems that the old limit used to be 6…so they kind of have kept up with the times, but maybe just going to an extreme, maybe say 20 slots, would take care of the vast (probably very vast) majority of the applicants.

I am only worried about what my friend says because he called FAFSA too. But if the website says that, and my two calls have gotten the same consistent answer, then I will believe it. I guess even the customer service people at FAFSA can get things wrong too.

Thanks for the help!

The vast, vast, vast majority of kids are not applying to over ten colleges…you’re fine, just follow the directions. Remember if you make any changes to your FAFSA you have to repeat the entire process…put the original ten in make the changes, wait until they process and go back and make the changes to the next bunch.
