My daughter applied to UM on December 1. She still hasn’t heard back yet about whether she has made the preliminary academic cut and to schedule her audition.

The website said the students would hear back in 4-6 weeks. Of course, there were the holidays in between. So I called the music school and they said it might be more likely to be 6-8 weeks when she’ll hear.

Anyone have any recent experience with this? Anyone out there who has also not yet heard? Thanks so much!

My D sent her application to Michigan on Oct. 16 and got her invite on or around 11/24, so it does take awhile. They need to have received EVERYTHING, including SAT scores, transcripts and recommendations (from what I understand) before the application is passed from the academic admissions office to the School of Music, Theatre and Dance. (I know this because I called Michigan's regular admissions office to ask a question about whether some of my D's materials had arrived, and coincidentally, spoke to a woman there who said that she is one of the people who look the applications over and pass them on to the SMTD.) So all in all, it took about five to six weeks to hear. Plus, you need to factor in the holidays. I am sure she will hear soon. Best of luck!

I think my son heard back about the same time as NMR's D. He sent his application around Oct 25th and heard back around the end of November. So 4-5 weeks sounds right.

Thanks NMR and llong39. Did your kids apply as dual applicants by any chance? If so, do you know when the second (non-MT) major lets the student know if admitted?

All the best to your kids on their UMich auditions!!

My daughter's application was submitted electronically on November 29th, and I think her supplemental forms (transcripts, school forms, etc) probably were there within the same week. I just looked at the letter she got saying she had been approved academically and could schedule her audition, and it was dated December 11th. I think we received it around the 16th.

You know, considering the December 1st deadline, they probably got a zillion of them ON the 1st. Maybe getting it in just a day or two ahead put us quite a bit in front of the slew that came in on the 1st.

Yikes. I requested the March 7 audition. Maybe I better check with the office again and speak to someone who can look at her actual file and see what's up in case anything is missing (though it should not be). When I first called, I spoke in generalities and did not ask them to check my daughter's actual application materials. Now I'm worried that something is up. Then again, maybe you are right tiffw that they got bombarded on Dec. 1 and are just backlogged. I think I better check again.

NewbieMTMom, you are no doubt correct that Michigan's admissions office got an avalanche of applications on Dec. 1, as that was the priority deadline. They no doubt are sorting through them all! However, to be on the safe side, if I were you I would call the Admissions Office (have your D's Michigan ID # handy) and have them look at her file to check whether everything has been received. It won't hurt, and they are so darned nice at Michigan that they surely won't mind the call. (My D did not apply as a dual applicant -- it's BFA in MT or bust for her! :) -- so I cannot address the second part of your original question.) Please keep us posted and know we are all keeping our fingers crossed that she hears really soon.

NewbieMTMom - I submitted my application a few days before the December 1 deadline and found out in the first week of January that I'm approved to audition in Chicago on February 5. Since the deadline for applications is December 1, I have a feeling they review applicants based on when their first choice audition date is - since your D's isn't until March they may still be in the final review process.

Also have your D set up a WolverineAccess account. They say to wait 2 weeks after you submit your application (which obviously has now passed for her) and I think there's an ID number that she'll need to get out of an e-mail confirmation she should have gotten after she submitted, but once you create the account you can check online to see what materials they have or haven't received.

actormcfamous makes a good point about the possibility that they review them in order of their first choice audition dates. My d's first choice was January 25th! That would totally make sense that her application was processed more quickly. (And yes, she is auditioning on the 25th.)

However, like NMR, I too would be on the phone calling with a specific request for them to check your d's file! You never know what can happen, and asking is the only way to find out!

Thanks all! I took everyone's advice and called. I believe they had a slight glitch in early December but everything for my D was there and in the system. Said she should hear next week. Phew!!!!

I applied late November, but my letter of recommendation got messed up. I got an email saying I was accepted for audition maybe two-three weeks after my application.

It is expected though, I sent in my application 2 weeks late. I am going to call tomorrow to check and see if they have everything. I requested the last audition date, March 28th, the only one they told me was available. Well, best of luck to all of you!

I don't know if this is the right forum to ask this question on, but my high school junior D will be visiting UM the week of March 17, and plans to sit in on the intro Performance class the admissions office said we could visit. Apart from taking the campus tour, and possibly getting an appointment with someone in admissions, does anyone have any ideas on how to make our visit the best possible?

I should note that I'm from Ann Arbor - and my wife and I are both UM grads - and my D already has an idea of the town and campus, since we visit it several times a year. And yes, we know how cold and gray it is in AA through much of the winter. :-( Ann Arbor is such a great place to live; if it was warmer, I don't think we would have ever left.
