When did you put down housing deposit?

I’m curious to find out if parents put down housing deposits in advance of acceptance. At the University of Florida, you can pay $25 nonrefundable at the time of application as a placeholder for housing decisions. Do most pay in advance and risk losing one or more deposits or do most wait until acceptance to start on housing decisions?

$25 is relatively low. At one college I’m thinking about doing this for, its a 250 deposit.

This is an issue at relatively few schools so not everyone will have faced it - at many you can’t do anything with housing until you are accepted and enroll. Personally I hate the policy of pushing people to deposit early and NACAC says it’s unethical.

All that said, it’s $25. If you think your kid will go there, it may be worth it, especially if housing is not guaranteed.

thank you
