No, this is NOT another "duh" question, so PLEASE don't harrass me for asking this, and actually READ what I have to say, please. Thanks. :P

I'm looking at the UCSD academic calendar, and it has September 24th (Monday) as the start of the fall quarter. HOWEVER, it lists September 27th (Thursday) as the first day of instruction. So, does this mean that, when I move-in early on September 20th (the Thursday previous), I will have an entire week before I actually begin to attend classes? If so, what are we supposed to do during that week? Just get used to the campus, make friends, get our textbooks, attend more ceremonies/events around the campus, etc.? Or, is the calendar mistaken, and we actually begin lessons on the Monday that the fall quarter begins?

This leads me to another question. Say that I complete my finals on, say, a Tuesday in December. I know that I can then leave for home after that final. We have three weeks for Christmas break. But that is when the next quarter begins... again, it says on the calendar that actual instruction does not begin until a Thursday. SO... does this mean I could (theoretically) actually have closer to four weeks off for Christmas break, vs. just the three weeks listed? That, I really have three and a half weeks of vacation, plus whatever days I get off, depending on how early I finish all of my finals?

as for the first question, yes you have the point (you can move in as late as 27th)
second question, i would like to know too but i woud guess yes

There are several events during the week of 24th. A lot of them social, some academic. I know some departments have orientations during that week, with Bioengineering off the top of my head on the 25th. You can check the UCSD Calendar website for a full list.

But first classes are 27th, just like it says.

what they said. for the second question, i got confused reading it but winter break is from whenever you finish your finals until jan 6 (the day before classes start again). i am, of course, referring to this calendar:

i don't know what you mean by classes starting on a thursday for winter break. the only time this happens is for fall quarter and ONLY fall quarter.

Ooh, sorry, I had winter break confused with spring break... that starts on a Thursday. But thank you. :) It's good to know that I'm not completely off-base on this!

yeah it just means classes start on Thursday..27th. i think technically you can move in that whole week up to the 27th, but most ppl move in on the 22-23 anyway. If i remember correctly, there should be a list of events on a calendar like thing online for that week. basically it lists all the major events going down at ucsd at all the diff colleges and student orgs.

DEFINITELY go to the events because there are lots of FREE FOOD (mostly burgers, hot dogs, not too much healthy stuff) and it save your meal points too haha.

The activities i remember are BBQs, ICE CREAM, dances (there is practically one every night at a diff college each night so GO!), academic stuff (for your major/dept), student orgs (i remember i went on a run once with a running group).

anyway LOTS of stuff you can do that week and it's fun.
