When do college swim coaches in D3 finalize their roster?

Here is my situation. Some D3 schools and I have been in contact for a year now and they all have given me interests. Two of the schools are Emory and NYU which are my top choices in terms of athletic recruiting. They have given me times to achieve in SCY and I am very close to the times although not yet. I was wondering when do D3 swim coaches finalize their rosters?

Im a senior btw and i will be attending college in 2020

Since im graduating decembet 2019

December*

You can somewhat tell by the commitments on collegeswimming, although I bet some recruits are late to post. I think that some are committed in the December ED time frame and another set during EDII in January or February. I suggest looking at the power index of the committed athletes to see if you are in range as it seems like some coaches may shoot for the moon at first and then settle into their reality.

Based on my son’s team, there are a lot of ED commits that are just updating collegeswimming. I think they were waiting for the official signing of the letter of intent. Some schools around here held ceremonies for signing last week and this week. Quite a few knew back in December, but are just updating now.

Thank you for the reply. Is there like a certain point before ED that i can ask the coach if they are going to support me in application? Espacially d3

And something weird happened today. Basically i SPECIFIED (when i first started emailing) to one of d3 coach that i will be entering college in fall 2020 and he emailed me today asking whether i applied to their school. Shouldnt the coaches know the general process of application? Is this a bad sign? Or did the coach send the wrong email.

Many D3 coaches will start the pre-read process July 1, before start of senior year
that is when things get more serious. DI and DII are typically farther along by then, but many pre-reads will happen in that summer too. Hopefully you will have already spoken with coaches before then, either via email or in person. They will typically be more attentive to and proactive with students they think they might support. You should ask each coach about their process, and where you are on their list.

I wonder it the coach could think you are taking a gap year
aren’t you graduating high school in Dec 2019? If so that is an atypical schedule in the US, and the coach could be confused if you are simply listed as a 2019 grad in their system. Let the coach know your specific situation, then the timeline of activities should become more clear.

Yes, it seems like coaches may be confused if you are graduating “off season.”

yeah he told me he misread something. I told him that i will be entering college in fall 2020 although im a class of 2019 student because im graduating december 2019. ALSO @Mwfan1921 by meaning attentive and proactive, does it mean coaches replying to your email every time and and asking questions to me? One of d3 coach kept responding to my email quite fast and he asks me questions everytime he replies.

Coaches are regular people too. Some are older and don’t use social media like a 25 year old does. My daughter’s coach was young so always replied to texts and emails quickly. We had contact with others who were slower, or only checked email during office hours, or went on vacations and went silent for long periods.

Are you male? By graduating in December, you will be skipping your final high school season. Is that your plan? If you are female, your season is over so this is moot. What will you be doing Jan to May after graduating? Hopefully you are part of a competitive club team and plan to continue training before you start in fall 2020.

D3 finalization depends on the school. Seems like commitments start July 1 and into the fall/winter. Are you a US student?

international student (class of 2019, graduating december 2019, from january till I go to college (which is fall 2020 september), I have nothing to do. I guess I can just train and travel. My sport is swimming and looking into d3 (emory, nyu, vassar, tufts). The REAL question is, when is the time when I can say to the coach "I am commited to your school and asking “will you support me in the application process?”

The competition season for high school varies by state. The Colorado girls just finished their season, well into the second semester so someone who graduated in Dec wouldn’t have finished out.

You first have to understand what times you need for each coach to consider you. If you meet those times, questions you should ask are:

What are the steps in the recruiting process?
How many recruiting slots do you have for 2020? (They might further define slots by bands, or some other type of level mechanism)
What is the timing of your decisions?
Where do I currently stand with regard to your list?
How can I move up your list?
Will you be doing pre-reads, and if so, when?

Also understand the coaches terminology
ideally what you want is commonly called a ‘slot’—full coaches support in the ED round with a positive pre-read. Some schools might call these ‘tips’. Recruits with full coaches support and positive pre-reads generally have the highest rates of acceptance, but not guaranteed, not 100% success rate. In D3 there are no letters of intent or athletic scholarships.

There are other levels of support as well, such as ‘soft’ support (some schools call this a ‘tip’)—typically without a pre-read, may or may not require an ED application, and generally has a lower rate of acceptance than athletes who have full support
basically the student has to have academics and test scores at least in the mid-range of the school’s averages.

In terms of your list, Vassar coaches are generally believed to have less influence in the admissions process than the other schools. Tufts has the most pronounced sports culture of the schools on your list. There can also be variability in coach influence by sport in a given school as well, so hopefully some of the swim parents will comment on this thread.

All the coaches have given me times that I have to achieve and some coaches already considered me as a strong recruit. They have given me times short course yard pool which I dont have times for because there are no short course yards pool except the US. But I think the coach (like NYU) is interested in me and consider me as a recuit because he said “before we proceed in the recruitment process” after I sent out how interested i was in their programme.

But I am not late right? for the recurit process
sorry but Im a bit anxious.

You are not too late for D3 recruiting for fall of 2020, some coaches might have some slots ‘filled’, but most coaches still have not finalized anything. Pre-reads generally won’t happen until this summer, which is when the process really picks up. Just continue to get good grades, follow up with the coaches as you have been, and make sure you understand their terminology
do not hesitate to ask what they mean by ‘x’. I do not know if you will need financial aid, but that may be another consideration as you make your choice between these schools.

right thank you
