When do dorms open/classes start?

I have a few questions about getting started at USC...

Living in Kentucky, I kind-of have to plan how/when I'm going to get down there pretty early because I have to pack up my things, parents have to take off work for a few days, and drive 33 hours to get there.

That being said, does anyone know when the dorms open? I'd like to get down there the first weekend that they're open, or a day or two earlier if they open on like a tuesday, because I think I have to pay some $/night, but can get there a few days early.

Also, There's no way I can make it to orientation, so how should I sign up for my classes? Meet up with someone as soon as I get there, or talk to someone online/via phone?

Also, when is the school year/when is summer break?

All this would be extremely helpful to planning everything, as I can't find it anywhere!

That is your best friend, lol. Move in is Wed. August 18. For freshmen, I’d definitely advise going that first day (or earlier if you can) because those first few days are when everyone is free and there’s so much to do on campus to meet people during welcome week!

Classes start on the following Mon., August 23.

Now generally, I believe you need to have some sort of “excuse” to be able to move in early. However, I’m pretty sure that international orientation (the one that takes place right before school starts) is an accepted one. Seeing as you can’t make it for the regular orientations, I’d call the admissions office and explain your problem (ie. why you can’t make orientation). Then ask if you can do the international orientation. If you do get permission, then you SHOULD be able to move in a day or two earlier.

If they won’t let you do international orientation, then you can ask the admissions people how you should register, but my guess would be you’d have to wait until you move in.

Winter break starts Dec 16 and summer break starts May 12, both taken from the academic calendar page. Remember, you may finish earlier, it just depends on when your personal exams are.
