When do Honors College & merit scholarship notifications arrive?

Still no honors or scholarship notification here. Applied by November 1, admitted in November. CSE, 35 ACT, 3.99 UW, NMSF–getting impatient. Have any CSE students gotten into honors yet?

@Booajo I’m the original poster on this thread. My son was admitted to CSE in November. Similar stats but not NMSF (missed that sucker by one point!) We have not heard about honors or merit. We’re OOS.

He wrote U of M, and the CSE admissions counselor wrote back: “Since you have been admitted, you are now undergoing the review process for both scholarships and honors. While we do notify some students on a rolling basis, the majority of our decisions do not go out until towards the end of our deadlines. If you are admitted to honors, you will be notified by the end of this upcoming January, whereas scholarships can be awarded until the end of this upcoming March.”

So sounds like we may have to wait longer…

When my son logged in to check his status, he realized that he had not submitted a scholarship application. Apparently there is a separate scholarship application so make sure it is submitted. Not sure of the deadline; he submitted it at some point in December. I don’t think there is much to the application but it does have to be submitted.

CLA has a separate application for college-specific scholarships. The others may as well but not sure about that. For university-wide scholarships (which are the majority given out to incoming students) no application is necessary - all are considered. This is very different from, say, UW-Madison (where MN students have reciprocity) - there you actually DO have to apply in order to be considered.

@MFHP96 thanks so much for your update! Makes me feel better!

@MFHP96 -yes, thanks so much, my son applied CLA and while he got in a long time ago, no information on merit or honors. His high school rep called him after he got in to see if he had any questions and he mentioned late January or mid-February. Hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later :).

My son checked his portal yesterday and found out he got into CSE honor.

Daughter applied to CBS mid-Oct, accepted Nov 1st with 32 ACT, 4.33 GPA and excellent EC. Received $5K National plus $6K Bentson Family scholarship offer by postal mail this week. Do not think she has received honors invite, but not positive.

Very happy for her since $11K/year total is just enough to make it affordable for her as a non-resident. Due to the steep OOS tuition hikes last year and this year, it’s also much pricier than the total cost in-state at UIUC now, but less than her offers at Iowa, SDSU and Tulane. I think Minnesota might be the front-runner, but anything can happen in the next few months. Big choices ahead!

@illinoisx3 - honors will be posted on her tracker.

@JBStillFlying Do you think it’s not a good sign that my son hasn’t heard about honors or a scholarship yet? (FYI - he’s not a NMSF…missed it by one point.) That darn Tracker doesn’t look any different than the day it said he was admitted in November.

@MFHP96 - with CSE it’s really hard to say. First of all, I’ve heard that only 10% of every college is admitted to honors and that’s typically the tippy-top 10%, stat-wise. Your son is up there so hopefully it’ll come through (don’t know whether they consider course load as well but probably do - esp. with CSE!). Critically, you need to know that honors is determined by college, not university- (else it would be filled with CSE/CBS and no one else  ). His stats would be a slam dunk for honors at most if not all of the other colleges, but honors at CSE is very, very selective. Also, I’ve heard that it’s not necessary to get into honors in CSE - it’s rigorous enough as is, TUVM! However, for those who are looking for an accelerated track and like research, honors provides the resources. Finally, you needn’t be admitted to honors to get merit aid - it’s an indicator, not a necessary condition.

One other thing - this is the first year they went full Common Ap. They appear to be swamped. So things are a tad slower this year than prior years. For the Nov. admits, it’s possible to be notified during the spring even in a normal year when things are running smoothly. So don’t give up just because things are taking a bit longer this year.

Hope that helps!

Last year my son was admitted in late Oct or early Nov and received the scholarship packet in early December. Thisa year my daughter received her scholarship letter in late January. It likely is a rolling process like admissions, or at least is done in waves until March from what I’ve read from past years. It probably varies a lot by college/major as well, as JBStillFlying said. My son was notified of CSE honors before the merit letter came, while my daughter’s tracker doesn’t appear to show any honors invite for CBS.
