When do I file as a transfer? (help! easy to answer I think!)

Hello everyone! I plan on APPLYING for transfer around Nov/Dec 2014 to be admitted to Fall 2015, so yes, still a while away, but I like to plan ahead! My question is... I've read some people knowing how much aid they get once they're accepted (or within a few days following), so how do they know so soon? Do you fill out FAFSA in January and then wait for your acceptance to see the reward? Is that how it works? Or do I file AFTER I'm accepted?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'd be so appreciative if someone could help!

The FAFSA is available Jan 1st. So you will want to fill out the form on Jan 1 2015 or soon after. Do not wait to file. The financial aid package will often come with or shortly, acceptance, but it depends on the school.

Too early.
You should start to apply in Spring of 2015.

Check the school you are transferring to for deadlines. At my school, the priority deadline for scholarships and FA for hopeful fall transfers is Feb 1st. Waiting till spring would mean missing out on possible scholarships and aid. Check your school.

Thanks to everyone! And 4kidsdad, would it be bad to apply so early as a transfer? I just thought I’d want to get everything done ASAP, but is waiting for the Spring really better? Thanks again for the help!

I think you should apply as early as you can. Transfers often get lousy aid pkgs and get them VERY late, so if you apply early, your chances may be better.

^^ Is that in part due to the deadline being later (both Early and Regular)?

I definitely would not wait till Spring. Some aid that has limited funding will probably already be gone by then and scholarships may also have a deadline (as I said in my earlier post, my school’s priority deadline for Fall transfers is Feb 1st). That said, check *your *school for their priority deadlines.

If you apply too early, the new school may not have all your grades to make a decision.
