I am a incoming freshman. I want to get a job in Summer camp upstate during June 18 to August 18. But I am not sure when do I need to move in Stony Brook, and the schedule of any important events during that time. Can you give me some information?

September 1st is move in day. Sept. 4th is first day of classes.

You will get a letter about mandatory Orientation by June or July

What is provided in dorm rooms for students? What should students bring with them? Is a bed, mattress, or refrigerator included?

you get a bed [mattress included lol], a trash and recycling bins, desk, closet, and dresser. and a lamp.

What about cable TV and a private telephone -- or is that extra?

Is it possible to bring your on sofa instead of the bed that they provide you with?

You can bring a couch if you want -- and if it'll fit -- but I don't think you can remove the bed from the room. Cable and phone jack are included, but you have to pay your own phone bill.

Ignore the move-in date; that's the Spring 2007 date. Actually, the parent page on that site (http://www.stonybrook.edu/sb/newstudents/index.shtml) answers a lot of questions too.

Cable jack is included (and you don't have to pay extra to use it) but you'll have to bring your own TV if you want one. One phone per room is included; you don't want to bring your own phone because it won't work on the university's digital phone system. Calls to the 631, 516, 212, 718, 917, and 347 area codes are free (woohoo!) but I don't think there's any way to call other area codes without a phone card. That's what cell phones are for :)

Bringing your own bed is probably a bad idea. You'd need to find somewhere to store the school's bed unscathed for the whole year (not easy), not to mention if your bed took up more room than the school's, you might have a pretty ****y roommate on your hands. Or imagine if you're tripled! Not to mention, a sofa can't be lofted, and raising your bed can be a significant source of extra space.
