When do I take the SAT?

I’m currently a sophomore in high school and I was wondering when do I take the SAT or ACT? I aspire to get at least a 2000 through studying and preparation. I was thinking spending time after AP exams are over during summer to thoroughly review for SAT and ACT, then take them early junior year. Is this a proper plan, or do you advise for a change. Thanks so much!

I personally would wait until you finish Algebra II. I am a Junior and am taking the SAT in May. However, if you feel ready, feel free to take it in November/December of your Junior year. I advise you to study over the summer and during vacations to get in as much prep time as possible.

Yes, of course! I took algebra 2 last year and am in precalc/trig right now! I am thinking taking it during summer if they have any dates for that.

Have you taken the PSAT at all yet? You’ll be awkward because you’re going to fall in the hamster year where they give you the new PSAT/SAT. But you should definitely take PSAT fall of junior year, then take the SAT in the winter/spring of your junior year. Maybe take it again if you want to get your score up before senior year rolls around.

If you are pretty sure you can self-motivate yourself to study all summer, it would probably be easier to take it in the fall and get it over with. For me the best times to take SAT/ACT was winter before second semester got into full gear or fall (for me second semester is generally crazier). I also studied over Thanksgiving break (if you have that), but I couldn’t motivate myself enough to study during Winter Break so that wasn’t great. Make sure you don’t leave it off until spring if you plan on taking a lot of AP exams, though.

Great, @ravster3! Really, all the math skills you need are learned up until Pre-Calculus. Unfortunately, the SAT isn’t offered in the summer, and the first administration of the exam is in October 2015 (for next year). If you want to avoid taking the new SAT in spring 2016, study study study!

So, general info for you, the SAT is offered in October, November, December, January, March, May and June. However, I assume that the new SAT will begin in March 2016.

Like other posters said, be sure to take the PSAT before taking the real SAT to know how it feels, as well as being comfortable with the test format. Also, buy prep books and go through them over the summer, especially the CollegeBoard’s Blue Book. I personally am also using Barron’s, Princeton Review Practice Test and Kaplan.

yes @thedidactic i have written the PSAT this year!

@akustrei yes i think want to study thoroughly over summer break and keep reviewing in august and september, then walk in and the take the SAT early junior year

@futuredoctor2028 ok that’s great to know about the math skills! I feel comfortable with the format and I do not want to take that new SAT! I will definitely plan out an agenda to study with multiple books over summer and early junior year for the SAT (thank you for the book suggestions!)

No problem! Good luck.
