When do incoming freshman start registering for courses?

during orientation…

During orientation do you register for courses for just the first semester or the whole year?

First semester only. However, typically year-long courses will receive auto-reg for spring. But that won’t occur until late fall.

are you a current student at BC?

My daughter was just accepted off the waitlist. We were thinking that we would register for orientation at the last date in August, to avoid having to fly out twice since we live in California. Since it’s the last possible registration, will she be at a disadvantage for getting into her classes?

Thanks!

BC reserves a small number of slots per class for each orientation in order to avoid that issue. The main disadvantage of the last orientation is that you move right into your room so the students will be distributed around campus rather than all together in one dorm. This may be a little more challenging socially but in your case might be outweighed by the advantage of making only one trip.

Yes. If she attends an orientation in July, for example, and does not obtain all the classes/times that she prefers, she has all summer to keep checking online (Agora) for available spots as students will add-drop over the next few months.

Only for smaller Frosh courses, such as English/Writing. Large lecture classes, such as Chem, are wide open, but the more popular professor or “better” lab times will be full by late August.

P.S. BC’s orientation is not-to-be missed by the parents. It is well worth attending. "nuff said.

Thank you so much for the insight about orientation and class selection. We talked to a local family friend who told us to go to the last scheduled orientation but then I realized their student is in the honors program, so it’s an entirely different process. I appreciate the speedy response, too!

IMO, that is only good advice for internationals or if finances are a big concern. Plus, by going earlier, it’s a chance to pick up more BC ‘stuff’ in the bookstore. :D
