I was just wondering when do most people hand the recs to the teachers? Technically it should be after semester one which is around mid-December, but would become a hassle for teachers to write them during their Christmas break?

I have already handed them in becuase the applaications are due Jan 15 and I want to make sure all my teachers hand them in on time.

First check to see if your current school has a process and timing for asking for recommendations and transcripts. If it does, follow it. I don’t know when most people ask for recs, but a good time would be late enough that your teachers have gotten to know you, but early enough to give them plenty of time to write them. Sometime between now and the first week of December would probably be good.

Tell your teachers when they are due and then ask when they would prefer to have the forms. (I know that I really hate when people give me things months in advance, but that’s me.) Thank them for doing this for you and give them the two blank forms (in case they mess one up) and pre-stamped envelopes - all in one large envelope that is clearly labeled. It is also a good idea to include a little note explaining why you want to go to boarding school.

Then, at the beginning of January, thank them again. Not only is it polite, it will remind them to do them in case they’ve forgotten.

Make it as easy for them as possible.

neatoburrito, have you heard of any “pushback” from public school teachers when their student “explains” that he/she yearns for a stronger and richer educational experience?

I would steer clear of words like “richer” or “stronger” and keep to more emotionally neutral language. There are opportunities in BS that simply do not exist in public school, (or day school for that matter). He will focus on that.

I handed my forms to my teachers today, as it was the last day of our first trimester!
