I know the official move-in dates are Saturday for freshmen and Sunday for upperclassmen, but do many upperclassmen move in earlier than that for transportation or other reasons? Thanks.

Unless you are part of an orientation program, in training, or part of some organized group, you cannot arrive early for free.

However, you can apply for early arrival housing (check the ResLife website). There is an additional cost (something like $30/night).

Each year, we’ve always been kind of surprised that kids don’t arrive earlier, but I guess that’s why. We went a day earlier and our son just stayed in the hotel with us so we were ready to move him in the morning of move-in day. The whole move-in experience was more relaxed both years than we anticipated.

The idea of traveling up the I-95 corridor over Labor Day seems insane, but one way to look at it is all the kids who didn’t get it who would love to be going no matter what the traffic’s like!

The worst day going up 95 (from NYC to Providence) is Friday pm, so Saturday travel is easier, and if you waited till Sunday, it would be pretty easy. Classes actually don’t start until Wed so later would work, but most students like to get back as soon as they can to see friends etc. We usually get there the night before to be fresh on move in day. (not such a big deal when no roommate to meet). But, one warning: hotels around are fully booked and expensive for all weekend! (Even out to CT, as that is a tourist area)
