When do National Merit Letters typically go out?

Does anybody know when letters are sent out in this NMSQT process? I was hoping to know what the average date was in years past, so I could better set a schedule for myself for the applications process. Also, will I be able to confirm myself as a finalist before November 1st, or does that occur later on? If it is not confirmed by that date, how should I frame this award in my application?

Thanks.

Which letters exactly? The NMSF letters were sent to the school, so those students will receive that information as soon as the school hands it over. The official NMF notification is sometime in early spring I think. You wouldn’t have confirmation by Nov 1. I would list it as NMSF in any application you do now, as the schools know the timelines and know nobody can say right now that they are NMF.

Schools know that unless you have crappy grades or a crappy SAT score (which they would see on transcripts) you will advance from semi to finalist as long as you turn in everything. Putting semifinalist is plenty. Congrats, BTW

So my school likely has confirmation? They haven’t given that information out yet at my high school. I suppose I’ll simply have to wait until the weekend is over (my school has a four day weekend for labor day).

Thanks for the information!

@vDuncan the public release date this year is Sept. 14th. Your school will hopefully inform you before then so you can proceed to work on your NMF application. But you will know for sure by the 14th, if not via your school then by calling NMSC directly and asking (as well as getting the official cut-off for your state).

If you believe you are sf you can always check in with your counselors or the principal to see what’s going on and request notification as soon as possible so that you can register for the SAT, work on the application and essay, etc.

As far as notifying colleges, my kid has already submitted one application which included the information that she was at least commended (because with a 220 SI that’s a guarantee) and that her status as to SF or commended would be determined in Sept. She won’t be submitting additional apps before mid-month anyway so she’s happy to wait for the press release. If you need to submit ASAP in order to be in the queue for res. halls, etc., then just let them know your current status (if 209 or over you are at the very least commended) and that sf will be determined one way or the other later in the month. Once the press releases go out your status will be “official” and you can call everyone and update your status and they will be able to independently verify it. Colleges are very good about this sort of thing. Many have an NMSF coordinator who works directly with those applicants so they are used to getting these updates.

Good luck to you!
